“Stop!” I yell, but I’m too late.

Ridley disappears.

Rainey roars in anger.

Fearghas vanishes, and Delaney screams. “Fearghas!”

Bronywyn turns her attention on Cole, and I blur forward, stepping up and shielding him from her wrath. “Stop, Bronywyn!” The moment I’m in front of her, she brings her hand down. Even with her eyes completely black, I can see the pain within.

The betrayal.

“Why should I?” she asks. “You think yourselves capable of making my decisions for me?” She steps closer to the edge. “I should kill you all.”

“The dark magic is changing you.”

“You’re right,” she replies. “It’s making me better.”

Green magic slams into her back, a steady stream straight from Delaney’s palm. Cole’s shifted, Rainey and Elijah both stand, blades drawn, prepped for a fight and I realize just how badly we all fucked up.

Was this ever going to work? Was there ever any real hope of bringing Bronywyn back? Or was this some kind of pathetic pipe dream?

“You’re picking a fight with the wrong witch, Delaney.”

“I kicked Lucy’s ass. Whooping yours will be a breeze.”

Violet magic slams into Delaney’s power, and she throws up her other palm, a shield that won’t hold up long. “Wrong.Wekicked Lucy’s ass. You never would have been able to kill her without me, and yet you repay me by trying to steal my power?” Bronywyn’s voice cracks with emotion. “You were never a friend to me.”

“Yes, I was!”

“No.”

The flicker of a gaze is our only warning before she slams her power into Rainey. The youngest Astor flies backward, body slamming into my wall. Bones crack as sheetrock buckles, and Elijah rushes for her as Cole lunges toward Bronywyn.

She hits him with another blast moments before Ridley reappears right behind her. Spinning, she plants her foot in his chest, and he disappears as he’s flung backward. When he reappears, Fearghas is with him.

The fae rushes forward and drops a shoulder, slamming into her and taking her to the ground. She laughs and rolls him over, pinning him to the ground between her thighs. I blur forward, but before I can reach her, my vision blurs, and I fall to the ground.

“Poor, pathetic Tarnley. Too fucking weak to stand. I could have helped with that.” She jumps up and slams her foot into Fearghas’s ribs. The fae grunts, and Delaney hits her with another blast of power.

Bronywyn spins and holds up her palm, freezing Delaney in place. The elder Astor sister is completely helpless.

“Let her go,” I manage, as I sit up.

“Why? So you can concoct yet another pathetic plan to try to take me out?”

“We could have saved you,” Delaney chokes out.

“How many fucking times do I have to repeat myself before you’ll hear me? I don’t need saving.” She releases Delaney, who stumbles back into Cole’s wolf form. He nuzzles her to keep her upright, and Bronywyn faces off with our entire group. “We could have been allies,” she says. “But you just made one hell of an enemy. You thought Lucy was bad?” She snorts. “I know every single one of your weak spots. If you were smart, you’d all run.”

In the blink of an eye, Bronywyn is gone.

Delaney whirls and rushes toward her sister, who still lies unconscious on the ground.

“She’s alive,” Elijah says.

“What the fuck just happened?” Cole demands, as soon as he’s in his human form again.

“We just got our asses kicked, that’s what.” Ridley’s smartass response as he takes a seat on my end table is an understatement for what just happened.
