Bronywyn didn’t even break a fucking sweat, and she could have killed every single one of us.

“She broke right through the ward.” Delaney shakes her head. “I don’t understand. That should have held.”

“Her magic is growing,” Fearghas informs us. “She’s going to be unstoppable if we wait too much longer.”

“Then what do you suggest?” Elijah asks as he lifts Rainey into his arms, carries her to my couch, and sets her down gently. “We already gave it our best shot.”

“We’re going to have to kill her.”

“We’re not killing her,” I growl back at him.

“Then what the hell do you expect us to do? She damn near killed us all.”

“But she didn’t. Which means she’s still her—at least, on some level.” Relief at Delaney’s words rushes over me.

It gives me hope that I’m not the only one who doesn’t want her dead.

Rainey groans. “I’m going to kill that bitch.”

“Delaney and Tarnley won’t let us.”

She sits up, wincing as Elijah helps her lean against him. “Seriously, Del? She’s way the fuck out of hand.”

“She sacrificed herself to save your mate,” I snap. “Are you really so quick to kill her?”

“If it comes down to her life, or losing any of you fuckers, absolutely.”

“This is unbelievable.” Barely able to stand, I push to my feet and head toward the elevator.

“Where are you going?”

“To get some fucking air.” The elevator doors shut, and I lean against the inside wall, trying to keep myself from falling. I’m not even entirely sure how I manage to make it outside, but I do, and the night air wraps around me as I head for the alley. The fresh scent of rain still clings to the city, a blanket of calm in the middle of my storm.

“You made a mistake.”

I stiffen, muscles tensing as I peer into the darkness ahead. Bronywyn takes a step toward me, eyes green once more, though the black rim has doubled in size. “I won’t give up on you.”

“Why can’t you see that I don’t want your help?”

“Why can’t you see that I don’t give a shit what you think you want? The magic is corrupting you, Bronywyn, whether you see it or not, and I won’t lose you to it.”

She steps forward and reaches out to trail a finger down my chest. “You already have. Tonight’s stunt cemented it.” Shoving her finger into me, she sends me back a step. “This is your final warning. Leave me be, or I will kill you before the bond ever has the chance to finish the job. Goodbye, Tarnley.”
