“Why?”

“He never said.”

“And you didn’t think it would be wise to figure out why the hell he wanted you to follow two hunters and a vampire?”

“Listen, I ain’t got no beef with you, Astor.”

Rainey grins. “You know who I am, then?”

He nods frantically.

She raises her blade and presses the tip of it to David’s throat. “Then I strongly suggest you get to talking, Davey. Otherwise, you’re going to die for two thousand measly dollars.”

David’s eyes shut tightly, and he turns his head as far as the brick wall would allow. He whimpers, and the putrid stench of piss fills my lungs. “Fucking-a, shifter. Have you no dignity?”

“What—” Rainey trails off, as she scrunches her nose. “Really? So, you have the balls to follow us, but not enough to keep yourself from pissing your pants?”

“I don’t want no trouble,” he whimpers. “I swear he didn’t tell me nothing. He just offered me the money and asked me to let him know where you went and when.”

“So, the council wants to know just what we’re doing. How sweet.” Rainey sheathes her blade and takes a step back.

The shifter’s eyes widen even further. “He was part of the council? I didn’t know that! Oh shit, what did I do?” Covering both eyes with shaking hands, he bends at the waist.

“Got yourself into a shit load of trouble, lad,” Fearghas replies.

“I would be willing to bet my left nut that he left because he knew we were watching him.”

Rainey turns to Elijah. “First off, don’t be betting any nuts. Second, I’m with you. Fucking lazy assholes. Trying to get us to do their dirty work.” Rainey turns back to David. “How would you like another job, Davey? Maybe one that’s not going to end with you as a shish kabob.”

“What do you want me to do?”

“You’re going to come along, play follow the leader for tonight. Then, when you report back to your boss, you’re going to tell us exactly what he says, got it?”

He pales slightly. “But…but…he made me promise not to say anything.”

“And you already broke that promise. Besides, trust me when I tell you we make much worse enemies than your new council friend. Do we have a deal?”

Gaze flickering between the four of us, he pales slightly but nods. “Yeah.”

“Good boy. We’re going to leave the alley, and you will wait a minute before following us. Make sure and keep your distance; have to make it look believable.”

David nods frantically, so Rainey, Elijah, and Fearghas step back out onto the sidewalk, and I follow, keeping the pace as I trail them down the street toward what I’m assuming will be the succubae den. As we walk, I keep my senses open for the young shifter, who has just inadvertently joined our little group.

Minutes tick by in silence as we move toward the center of town. Sidewalks are crawling with humans who are completely unaware that they’re surrounded by supernaturals working to blend in. Rainey’s hand lingers by her blade, and within minutes, I can sense the succubae just ahead. Dozens of them, if not more, based on the overwhelming aroma of sex and blood.

A true succubus den.The things I do for friends.

“Help me up.” Rainey gestures to a cracked window a few yards above the ground. Elijah reaches for her and lifts her, placing her onto his shoulders with no effort. Rainey peers up, and I extend out my senses, hoping to hear something inside that will tell us whether or not we need to interfere. Succubae tend to be vicious creatures, and they prey on humans and supernaturals alike.

I’d honestly be surprised if they weren’t doing anything to break The Accords.

After a moment, she taps Elijah on the shoulder, and he helps her down. “Have I mentioned that I hate succubae?”

“A time or two,” he replies. “We going in?”

“We are. I spotted at least seven humans, a handful of restrained shifters, and twice as many of the bitches.” She pulls out her blade. “Keep your lips to yourselves while we’re in there. Last thing I want to have to do is kick your asses for trying to please your new girlfriends with my head on a platter.”

“Take all the fun out of it, why don’t you.” Elijah winks at her, and she glares back. Then, he leans down and presses a noisy kiss to her forehead. “Let’s get this over with.”
