“Ready?” she asks me.

I nod.

“You?”

“I’m always ready.” Fearghas winks.

“Great.” Moving to the side door, Rainey grips the handle and opens it quietly, slipping inside and disappearing into the dark. Elijah follows, Fearghas goes in right after him, and I trail behind the fae, staying as close to him as possible while we move toward the massive red curtain hanging from the ceiling just ahead.

Soft grunts and groans reach me from here, and I grind my teeth together as my stomach churns. Of all the supernatural factions, the succubae are the ones I despise the most. They take advantage of sexual feelings, exploiting them and devouring their victims, who don’t realize how much trouble they’re in until right before they die and the illusion dissipates.

Most vampires can do it as well, sexually arouse their victims as they drink. Though, they tend to prefer the fear right along with the blood.

And then it hits me just how I used Bronywyn’s feelings against her, and I feel sick all over again.

Rainey grips the curtain and pulls it to the side.

A woman screams as we all rush in. A succubus bares her teeth and launches at Rainey. Before she can react, I blur across and grab the bitch by the throat, sinking my teeth in and ripping. Blood sprays the room, and I continue, devouring the evil and avoiding the victims.

By the time we’re done, blood covers the floor, the walls.

Humans whimper in the corner, and Rainey makes her way over to them as Elijah and I head toward the restrained shifters. They’re all gagged, and only two of them are actually conscious, so we free them quickly.

“How long have you been here?” I ask as I free the last one—a bird-shifter if my scent is to be trusted.

“I’m not sure,” he replies. “Maybe three days?”

“The humans?”

“Longer. They were here when we arrived,” the other conscious shifter, a feline of some sort, replies.”

“Call Walker!” Rainey calls over her shoulder.

Elijah retrieves his phone and taps on the screen before pressing it to his ear. “We’ve got quite a situation,” he says, once the other detective answers. “Rainey needs you. I’ll text the address.” Ending the call, he fires off a text and shoves it back into his pocket just as I’m pulling mine out and calling the cleaners in.

They can bring an ambulance and get these people proper medical care as soon as Fearghas removes their short-term memories. My guy answers on the first ring, so I give him the details and hang up.

“We have help coming,” I tell the shifters. “Stay here. They’ll make sure the venom is out of your system before you return home.”

“Thank you.”

I nod.

“I’ll handle the humans,” Fearghas offers, leaving us and heading over toward Rainey, as Elijah and I make our way over to a corner where we can watch all of it.

“There are too many of these damn places popping up.” He runs a hand over the back of his neck. “It never used to be like this, right?”

“That, or we just never paid it any attention before.”

“Nearly a dozen blood dens, a super-secret black supernatural market, and a succubae den? Shit’s getting out of hand.”

“Can’t argue with that, brother. Having the councils actually step up and do their jobs wouldn’t hurt.”

“That would be too easy. Especially since they’re so focused on Bronywyn at the moment. Bastards.”

“Isn’t that the fucking truth?”

“You three had fun.”
