Bronywyn

You are wasting time, witch. Kill them all, and we will rule.

Ignoring the voice, I step up to the front door of Elanora’s place. When she’d called less than an hour ago to tell me that her followers wanted to meet early, I’d honestly considered forcing them to wait until tomorrow.

Tomorrow, I wouldn’t have been this nervous because I would have been ready. As it stands, I have nothing prepared. Nothing other than my genuine thoughts on the council and what they’re doing to fuck things up.

Then again, honesty is always better, right? The lunar pendant presses against my sternum, right beside Chasin’s amulet, which I still wear due to its ability to capture magic. Ever since I accepted the light pendant earlier, my magic has been easily controlled. While the voice still rears its ugly, and completely unhelpful head, I’ve had no bouts of out-of-control magic, nor have I wanted to kill anyone.

It’s been a nice break.

“You good?”

I glance at Chasin, grateful the warlock came with me. I know he’s only doing it for selfish reasons, being part of the ‘in crowd’ with the new council and all, but I’m still glad that I’m not alone. “Fine. Let’s get this over with.”

“Speak from your heart, and you’ll be just fine.”

“Words of wisdom?”

He shrugs. “Heard it on a movie once.”

Rolling my eyes, I step through the front door and immediately stop in my tracks. The place ispacked. As in every single chair is hosting someone, and nearly two dozen witches stand in the back of the room, blocking the bar.

With all eyes on me, I swallow hard and head inside and to the right, heading for the front of the meeting room and crossing my fingers that I don’t pass out from nerves. Wouldn’t that be one hell of a way to assure the witches before me that they should follow?

I scan the crowd for Elanora but don’t see her anywhere. My best guess is that she’s in the back or—

“Bronywyn?”

Thoughts interrupted, I turn toward the witch who called my name. “Yes.”

She smiles at me, blue eyes lighting up. “Elanora has spoken very highly of you. We are eager to hear what you have to say.”

“I appreciate you all coming.”

“She told us to let you know to go ahead and get started. She’s running just a few minutes behind.”

“Okay.”

Chasin takes a seat in the corner and throws a thumbs-up sign my way, so I take a deep breath and roll my shoulders before beginning. “I’m Bronywyn Walsh,” I tell them. “And up until a few months ago, I was a light witch. I followed The Accords and tried my best to help others with my clinic.” As I speak, I let my gaze travel around the room. “After saving a friend of mine, I ended up spelled with the shadow magic that would have killed him.”

Not a peep. The crowd hangs onto my every word, and with each one spoken, I begin to feel a bit more comfortable.

“I could have found a way to get rid of it, but instead, I chose to use it to defeat Lucy.” That gets their attention, and most of the witches shift their gazes to the left and right, murmuring to one another.

“Twice now, the councils have let us down. First with the original witch, Heather, and again with her daughter, Lucy. Their job is to protect our community and hold up The Accords, yet they were far too worried about their own safety to get involved, leaving the task to a hunter family and those loyal to them.”

“You mean the ones you run with?” someone calls out.

I swallow hard. “Yes. The Astor sisters have fought tirelessly to keep the city safe.”

“Then why aren’t they here with you now?”

Go ahead. Tell them. Tell the witches how your friends fear you. How they want to change you.

“They are otherwise incapacitated at the moment. My plan is simple, dismantle the current system and build a new one. One that benefitsallsupernaturals.”
