Odette

“The fucking nerve.” Rage burns hot within my veins as I grasp the phone on my desk. They thought to come here and scare me, to come here and force me to retreat.

Well, not this time.

Not when I am so close to having everything I have ever wanted. Soon, the Astor line will be nothing more than a notation in the history books. Not even a footnote if I have my way.

Soon, none of these bastards will remain standing. And if I have to knock them down one at a time, that’s precisely what I will do.

“Do you have any idea what time it is?” Elliot snaps.

“Get your ass into my office. Now.” I end the call and stand, walking over to get myself a drink.

With shaking hands, I pour the vodka into my glass then turn to face the door as a sleepy-eyed Elliot storms in. Dark hair disheveled, he looks utterly ridiculous.

“What the hell do you want at this hour?”

“I just had a little visit from three Astors,” I snap.

“Three? What?”

“Delaney, Rainey, and Bronywyn.”

“Then where are their bodies?”

“They projected themselves here.”

“But that’s—”

“Rare magic. Yes. I know. Seems the knowledge was passed down to her. How? I’m not sure. He’s not her true father, seems impossible for her to possess his ability.” I chug the glass, letting the alcohol numb my fear for a moment before it burns off. “Do we know where Clarance is?”

“No. Haven’t located him yet. Why were they here?”

“See that we do. We need him now more than ever.”

“Why? We have them outnumbered.”

“Possibly, though Bronywyn claims she has an army at her back.”

“An army?”

“Stop repeating everything I say.”

“I apologize. I’m still wrapping my mind around being awake at three in the morning.”

“They have an army, Elliot, countless supernaturals ready to move against us, and we’re sitting here like animals awaiting slaughter. If he manages to get to them before we find him…they may end up being far too knowledgeable to stop.” Simply thinking about the man who held me captive for the last two centuries sends my blood boiling.

I should have killed him then.

Would have if I’d had the chance.

“What will you have us do?”

I turn back to Elliot. “We need to get out of the city—regroup somewhere they can’t find us.”

“You want us to run?”
