“Note the lack of glitter,” he growls, and in the blink of an eye, they’re gone.

Rebounding from her shock quickly, Rachel crosses her arms. “I’m going.”

“I’m not taking you.”

“Fine. Then I’ll go with Sarah.”

Ridley whirls on me. “Sarah is coming, too?”

“She is. We figured it would be safer to have more than one fae inside.”

His upper lip arches in a snarl. “Listen, human, you will end up getting yourself killed. Is that what you want?”

“If that’s what I need to do to ensure this bitch loses, I will do it. My life is no more important than anyone else’s.”

“Like hell it’s not.”

“I feel like I missed something.”

Rachel turns to me. “You didn’t miss anything.” She turns back to him, his glare almost inviting her to say more simply so he can have another reason to be pissed off.

“Okay, guys, seriously. What the hell is going on here? Who pissed in who’s Cheerios?”

Ridley grinds his teeth together as Rachel continues glaring at the fae. “Apparently, fae can simply stake claim to things they want. No prep work, no easy questions. They just point and say ‘that’s the one!’ ”

“Are you fucking kidding me, woman! I did not point and say ‘that’s the one!’” Ridley runs both hands over his face and groans.

“Wait a minute. He hit on you?” I’m trying to mask my amusement, to keep it out of my voice, but the level of shock—it’s nearly impossible to ignore.

“He absolutely did nothiton her,” Ridley snaps. “I simply told her what my magic was doing.”

“He has a magical boner for me, apparently.”

“A magical boner?” Ridley squeaks out, his voice barely audible over the laughter bubbling in my chest.

And then it hits me. The guilt. Because right now, the last thing I should be doing is laughing.

“Do you really think I want to be connected to a human? Do you have any idea how short your life span is?”

“No, but please keep reminding me how much better you are than I am.”

“Oh, for the love of—please stop. We don’t have time for this.”

“Exactly.” Rachel rearranges her medical bag, pulling the strap higher on her shoulder. “Now, I’m going with you. End of story.”

“Fine.” At the risk of Ridley’s anger being directed my way, I don’t argue—mainly because if they truly are injured, she can help.

“But you stay right beside Ridley so he can get you out if things go south,” I add, quickly.

She glares at me, but nods in agreement. “I’ll remain near him.”

“The witch didn’t tell you to remain near me,” he clarifies. “You will stay right beside me, woman. Right beside me.”

“You do not get to tell me what to do.” She turns on her heel and stomps away, disappearing through the edge of the trees.

As soon as I’m sure she’s no longer within earshot, I turn to Ridley and cross my arms. The fae is still staring off in her direction, shoulders slumped in defeat. “I didn’t think fae mated.”

“We don’t. Not in the same way other supernaturals do, at least.”
