“What does that mean?”

“We can have multiple partners—feel love for multiple people—but occasionally, our magic is drawn to someone. A sort of pull.”

“And you feel that for Rachel?”

He glares at me. “The last thing I want is to have a thing for a human. Their life spans are nothing but a blip on our radar. I made the mistake of telling her that we have a connection, though I have no intention of acting on it.”

“You are certainly acting protective.”

“Doesn’t mean a damn thing.” He sighs. “Now, we going to do this or what?”

Because I sense his pain, I let it go—for now. At least, with him. I have every intention of discussing this with Rachel—mainly because I’m willing to pay money that he didn’t bother to explain to her everything he just laid out for me.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned over the short time I’ve known him, Ridley does not have a way with words. He’s blunt, which is great when you want to know where someone stands, but shit when it comes to matters of the heart.

“We are. I want to wait until Delaney and her team are in place near the building, though.”

“Smart.”

“I thought so.”

“Perhaps we won’t all die, after all.”

“That’s the plan.”

“I truly hope we can reclaim Rainey and Tarnley.”

His words are a jolt to my already wounded heart. “Me, too. I don’t know what I’ll do if we don’t.”
