“Don’t you say a word!” Odette screams.

I shift my attention to her. “You are done, Odette.” I hold up my palm and let magic swirl atop it, violent sizzles and sparks as the orb grows larger and larger. “This is for my mother,” I snap as I drop to my knee and slam my hand down on her chest.

She doesn’t even have the chance to scream. Eyes wide, she stares up at me, mouth opening and closing as she struggles to breathe. Then, within moments, her body stills, her face falling slack.

All around me, the fighting begins to cease, the council members dropping to their knees in surrender now that their leader is dead.

Rachel steps forward, right beside Ridley. “Everyone—” A gun goes off. She stops speaking.

“No!” I scream as I rush forward. Ridley dematerializes and rematerializes right behind the councilman who pulled the trigger. He grips his neck and snaps then appears right beside Rachel as she falls to the ground.

He catches her.

“No. No.”

“Rachel!” I slide to my feet. I grab the bag off her shoulder and rip it open, searching for medical supplies to stop the bleeding. Fisting a bunch of gauze, I shove it onto the bullet hole in her chest.

“I—” she whispers. Then her face falls slack, her head falling to the side.

Ridley roars, gripping her to his chest like his will alone will bring her back.

My phone rings, the shrill tone breaking the silence.

“Yes?” I answer Delaney’s call, my gaze still on my dead friend.

“We’ve got a situation here!” she screams into my ear.

“What is it?”

“The city is under attack!”

“The supernaturals were given the order to wipe out as many humans as possible,” Harrie chokes out.

“We’re coming.” I end the call and push to my feet, doing my best to keep my emotions at bay.

“Keep her body safe,” Ridley whispers. I turn as he sets Rachel down. “Keep her safe.” He disappears.

“What the—”

“He’s going to go into the Veil,” Sarah tells us. “To try to bring her back.”

“Is it possible?”

“If they let him bring her back, it is.”

“That’s what happened with Aoife,” Elijah says, recalling his ex-fiancé—a human who was killed days before they were to be married. She was rescued by a fae prince and promised immortality in exchange for her hand in marriage.

He died shortly after, and she came to our rescue when the original witch inhabited Rainey’s body.

“Where are Tarnley and Rainey?” I move toward Harrie. He glances over at his wife, her body lying lifeless to the side.

“Pack lands,” he chokes out. “In the water distribution tube.”

“What the hell is that?”

Willa shifts back to her human form. “I know exactly where they are.”

Elijah throws Paloma’s husband to the line of councilmembers kneeling before our team.

I look to my team. “Delaney says the city is under attack. Clean up here; then go help her.”

“What should we do with them?” Natalia asks.

My answer is an easy one. “Show no mercy,” I order. “They wouldn’t have shown us any.”
