Bronywyn

We materialize on pack lands, and Sarah nods before disappearing again to help the others.

“Follow me.” Willa shifts to her wolf form and takes off between the small cabins that make up the tiny village.

Guided by moonlight, we rush after her, my mind going a million miles a minute as I process all the horrific things that could have happened to them while we were fighting. My heart pounds as we run, faster, faster—pumping our arms with all of the energy we have left.

Finally, we reach a massive chain-link fence that surrounds a group of covered concrete tubes.

Bones pop as Willa takes human form once more. “In there.” She steps to the side as Elijah grabs the lock and yanks. It snaps like it was made of sugar and not steel. We shove through the fence and reach the tubes.

“They’re in these?”

She nods.

“Which one? There’s at least half a dozen!”

“I don’t know, but they’re filling up now. They may not have a lot of time left! I’m going to try and stop the process, but the lids seal, and once it starts, there’s no getting them off until the pressure eases.” She turns her attention to a panel on the side of a small metal shed, so Elijah and I head to the nearest cover.

I call upon my magic, letting it loose so it concentrates on my palm, then I slam my hand down.

The seal doesn’t even budge.

“Tarnley!” I scream.

Nothing.

“Rainey!” Elijah calls out.

Again, nothing.

The water stops moving beneath us, and all falls silent. Willa turns toward us.

“How long until the pressure eases?” Elijah demands.

“I don’t know. I’m not sure how full they were.”

“There’s no safety release?” I ask, as Elijah tries again to remove the lid covering the top.

“No, for safety reasons, my father never built one in. If we were to release it, the cover would explode off the top.”

“I don’t fucking care!” Elijah roars. “Open the damned lids!”

Willa’s eyes fill as she rushes forward and tries to help him remove the lid. I hit the one beside it with another blast of magic.

Knowing that since Elijah is a hunter now, he cannot sense his bond with Rainey, I turn my attention inward, at my own.

Come on, Tarnley. Please be okay. Please be okay. We’re mere feet above them, and I’ve never felt so helpless.

Moments pass until finally, something clicks.

“Pressure is released!”

Elijah groans as he rips the cover free. It pops like a seal, and we both stare down into an empty tube.

“This one!” I rush to the right and grab the one I hit with power moments ago. Elijah grips the other side and we open it.

Nothing.
