And instead, it wasn’t until he helped her—and they fell in love—that my friend truly got the opportunity to live. It’s the happiest I’ve ever seen him, and truth be told, I adore the damned hunter.

“You know, I told Elijah to leave you be in the beginning.”

She turns to me and, in pure Rainey fashion, is not even slightly offended. “Yeah?”

I nod, then take another sip of coffee as a bright blue bird flies down beneath the porch covering and perches in the nest it built in the corner. “I told him that you were going to get him killed. I also am pretty sure I said it wasn’t like the world would be worse off with one less hunter.”

Rainey snorts. “Nowadays, it seems that may be true.”

I know she’s referring to our hunter party from the other night, and while I want to disagree with her, due to them, I can’t. It seems good hunters like the Astors are a dying breed these days. “For what it’s worth, I’m pretty glad he ignored me.”

She laughs. “I have to say that I am, too.”

Drexel rushes outside, eyes wide.

Rainey and I are on our feet before he can say a single word. “What is it?”

“Bronywyn said the wards are going off. There are a bunch of people heading straight for us.”

“Mother fucker. Can’t a person finish a fucking cup of coffee before going to war these days?” Rainey abandons her mug and runs inside, reaching behind as she does to withdraw a firearm tucked in the waistband of her pants.

Elijah meets us in the kitchen and hands her a silver blade before we rush into the living room.

The once sleeping fae are now wide awake and donning swords, prepared for battle.

“No idea who it is?” I ask Bronywyn, who’s carrying a short sword, eyes still slightly glossy with sleep.

Bronywyn shakes her head at my question. “Not at all. But it can’t be good.”

“Should we just take off? We have help now.” I gesture to the fae.

“I want to see what they want,” Bronywyn says. “If it’s to scare us, I don’t want to run. These assholes have chased us all from our homes—our lives—so unless absolutely necessary, I want to stand our ground now.” She glances around the room. “Everyone okay with that?”

A resounding, “Yes,” fills the room.

“We can get you out should things get deadly,” Easton offers.

“There’s never a dull morning with you lot.” Fearghas yawns as he comes to a stop beside Delaney. “You should stay inside.”

“Absolutely not,” she snaps.

He turns to Cole. “You’re going to let preggers here fight?”

The shifter shrugs. “I don’t let her do anything.” He slings an arm around Delaney’s shoulders and presses a kiss to her temple.

“And if you tried to make her stay inside, she’d likely kick your ass,” Rachel adds.

“That, too.”

“At least, stay near Gloria so she can get you out if things get bad.,” Fearghas shoots back.

“Listen, my life is no more important than yours.”

“Your baby is.”

Delaney groans. “Fine.”

The female fae moves close to her, and even as Delaney wants to act angry, I see her visibly relax—the movement so slight, I bet I’m the only one who picked up on it.
