I shake my head. She’s not dead, that much I know. But not being dead is not the same as— “I’ve got her!”

I blur outside as Z lifts a woman from the ground in the distance. I’m at his side in seconds, taking an unconscious Bronywyn from him. Kneeling to the ground with her in my arms, I rest her body on my knee and bite down on my wrist to press it against her pale lips. Both shoulders are bloody—her right one ripped nearly completely open. My heart hammers as I wait for her to wake. Face bloody and bruised, her breathing is ragged—but it’s still something.

“Is Fearghas here?” I ask, unwilling to look away from her.

“Yes.”

“Bring him.”

Z appears in front of me, Fearghas in his arms. He looks a hell of a lot worse than her, his throat partially ripped open. I pull my wrist away from Bronywyn long enough to press it to the fae’s mouth. He begins to cough and sputter almost instantly, so I pull it back and return it to the woman in my arms.

“Come on,” I whisper. “Don’t be fucking stubborn.”

She groans, head lolling to the side, so I yank her against my chest. “Tarnley?”

“Here, baby.”

“What—what the fuck happened?”

“You were bear-wiched,” Fearghas chokes out.

“Bear-wiched?”

“The bloody bastards both ran for you,” he explains. “Came out of nowhere.”

“Two of them?” Z questions.

Fearghas nods in confirmation.

Bronywyn rests her head back against my chest. “That explains the body aches.”

“Let’s get you both inside.” I stand, holding her in my arms, then blur toward the house, leaving Z to cart in the injured fae. I’m just heading inside when Delaney rushes out.

“Is she okay?”

“I’ve been better. But I’ve also been worse. I can stand now, Tarnley.”

Reluctantly, I set her down.

“Fearghas?” Delaney chokes out.

“He’s fine.” Bronywyn looks from me to her. “He stabbed Sheelin.”

Delaney gasps and covers her mouth with both hands. “He killed her?”

“No, or at least, I don’t think so. But she was pretty damn injured when she dematerialized out.”

Before Delaney can respond, Z and Fearghas make their way inside. “I’ve got some trousers upstairs; go get them,” Fearghas tells him. Z chuckles and leaves him standing with us.

Ridley appears beside Fearghas, making Delaney and Bronywyn jump. He grins, clearly delighted that he scared them. “You all look rather marvelous given that we just kicked ass.”

“Not all of us can dematerialize to avoid being splattered with blood,” Bronywyn retorts, gesturing to his clean suit.

Ridley shrugs. “You see Sheelin again? Bitch took off before I could find her.”

“I wouldn’t count on her showing back up anytime soon,” Fearghas says, his expression twisting to one of pain.

“You took care of it?”
