Bronywyn

After a kiss, Tarnley and I part ways, each of us heading to our own group. My father waves at me from his own, and I return the gesture as I close the distance between me and the team waiting for me. With each step, the envelope in my hand grows heavier and heavier.

After today, our world will never be the same. After today, everything is going to change. And while there will be chaos, I have to believe there will also be joy, relief—and if we’re lucky—order and routine will return to our world.

“Amell, it’s nice to see you again.”

“You too, Miss Walsh.” His gaze drops to my ring. “Congratulations.”

“Thank you. And thank you for this. I know you guys are not overly fond of being a taxi service.”

He snorts. “Are you kidding? I would much rather be doing this than fighting off massive mosquitos back home. You have ice cream here.” He winks, and the group behind breaks into laughter. “I’ve missed this place.”

“You used to live here?”

“Yes. For centuries. It’s why my eyes are green and not gold like the others. The longer we are here, the faster the gold fades.”

“Which is why Fearghas’s are different?”

He nods.

“Well, when this is finished, I’ll personally run to the store and get you all the ice cream you want.”

“Then the exhaustion is well worth it.” He winks at me, his expression amused and relaxed.

I face the crowd. “Everyone ready?”

“Yes!” they call out in unison. I do my best to study the faces of my team of seven. At my back, I have a witch, two shifters, three vampires, and a hunter. A pretty damn good team to be sure. With a tight smile, I turn back toward the rest of the group. Tarnley grins at me as the fae with him—a blonde woman wearing battle armor—touches his shoulder. He raises his hand and blows me a kiss, then disappears.

I swallow hard. Please survive this,I silently plead. Then, I turn back to my group and open my envelope. “Looks like we have a warlock by the name of Barnaby O’Malley. “

“Good. I was hoping we’d get to put that asshole in the ground,” the witch with us growls.

“You know him?”

She shakes her head. “But I know of him. He was the head of the Lunar Witch Task Force back when they deemed them a threat.”

Tightening my hands into fists, I practically growl as the paper clenches beneath my anger. The Lunar Witch Task Force is the very reason I refused to remain on the Witch Council. They murdered young witches born on Halloween simply because they could retain more power than the rest of us.

“What is the Lunar Witch Task Force?” Amell questions.

“They murdered innocent witches,” I respond. “Because they were born on the wrong day.”

Murmurs and growls leave the lips of my group. I roll my shoulders and withdraw the silver blade at my hip. “Let’s go take care of this asshole, shall we?” I show the fae the location scrawled on the paper.

“My pleasure.” Amell touches my shoulder, and the rest of us link hands. In the blink of an eye, we disappear, reappearing just outside an old house. It looms overhead, windows completely dark, moon high in the sky. Where it was afternoon in Billings, it’s near nine-o-clock pm here in Edinburgh.

“Stay close,” I tell them. “Keep your weapons drawn, and keep your eye out for anything out of the ordinary. For all we know, his wards could have already been tripped.”

They all nod in silent agreement. “Can you take us in?”

Amell nods, and in the span of a single heartbeat, we’re standing in what appears to be an expertly decorated foyer. Dark floors gleam beneath our feet as classical music plays around us, seemingly coming from speakers mounted in various spots above us.

Tapestries cover dark walls, some in bright reds and golds, others in greens and black. It truly is beautifully decorated. Then again, most monster’s houses are.

Not all evil is easily spotted, and this asshole is living like a king.

We move slowly down the hall, all of us keeping an eye out for anything out of the ordinary. Honestly, the fact that no one is coming after us is concerning. After what happened back in Billings, I would think they’d have better security.
