Did they not believe we would come for them? Were they truly that arrogant?

The hall ends at a massive staircase and, to the right, an open door leading into a study. I see a head of dark hair sticking up from the back of a high-backed leather chair, a glass of whiskey placed neatly upon a table beside him, a roaring fire ahead.

I glance back and offer my team a nod. They return it. I turn back toward the study and start to move inside. Just before I cross the threshold, a man calls my name, and I am ripped backward. I slam into Amell, who manages to catch me before I fall. “What the hell!” I whisper, loudly.

“This is a trap.” I turn to my father, who stands beside his fae, his face streaked with blood.

“How did you—” Before I even finish the sentence, I notice the ever so slight sheen of power separating us from the room. “How the hell did I not notice that before?”

“You weren’t supposed to notice it, at all,” a woman announces.

We all whirl as Odette appears at the bottom of the steps, a fae beside her.

“You,” I snarl.

“Hello, Bronywyn, Clarance. So nice to see you two reunited. Such a shame it’s under such unfortunate circumstances.” The witch smiles widely.

“I wasn’t aware any fae remained behind.” My father steps forward.

“You were aware of everything you were supposed to be aware of. Isn’t that right, Harrie.”

I stiffen, realization and shock flowing through me at the mention of a shifter who’d been such an intricate part of our circle. I turn as someone clears his throat behind me.

“You.”

He crosses both arms, a once familiar expression on his face. I’ve known Harrie for years—have healed him a time or two when Josiah had been his alpha. “Why?”

“Because I believe in the message Odette is trying to send. I’m tired of having to hide who I am, of being at the mercy of humans.” He spits the last word out, only furthering my confusion.

“Your wife is a human.”

“She is. And I love her because she knows what I am and accepts it. The others will, too.”

“And if they don’t? If they are far too afraid to see past the fact that you’re a man who can turn into a wolf?”

“We kill them,” he replies, easily.

“Does Paloma know? Is she a part of this?” The idea that she betrayed us, too—

“No. But she’ll see. Eventually.”

“And your team?”

“Taken care of,” he replies, moving across the room and grabbing the dark hair. He pulls, and a body hits the ground.

“Easton!” Amell yells, rushing forward. My father’s fae, Bernard, grips Amell’s arm and keeps him from rushing inside.

The shifter with me rushes for Harrie.

“No, stop!” my father calls out and jumps in front of him.

But the shifter doesn’t stop in time. He knocks my father into the warded room, putting him at the mercy of Harrie.

“Dad!” I scream, and Amell curses.

“I’m sorry!” The shifter stumbles back. “I’m so sorry.”

“Get her out of here,” my father orders Amell.
