THIRTY-FIVE

‘STILL COLD’ NIGHT LOVELL

Gio

Ihang up with Lexi, my relief at hearing her soothing voice dissipates as I look back at Detective Julio. He looks contrite, his eyes pinched as he runs a hand through his beard.

“I can’t have Jared’s death coming back to me.”

I give him a hard shove, pressing him against the driver’s door of the squad car I was just in, “His death will be the least of your worries. Why didn’t you tell me he was in town?”

His hands wrap around my wrists as I grip the collar of his shirt, his eyes blazing with anger, but he doesn’t fight me.

“You think he came here without knowing I was connected to you and your entire organization? He had all kinds of information, Gio! Blackmailing me and my cops, threatening to use the information one ofyourguys gave to him, but I still didn’t give him shit. The only reason he showed up at the apartment today was because he knew what was about to go down. I made sure to be there so you’d have back-up in the law enforcement.”

I know it was Pink who gave Jared inside information, and if the rat were still alive, I’d force feed him my entire clip. Still, something isn’t sitting right with me.

“Did you know what was going to happen today? Did you know that Alan was going to try and break into my apartment and kill my woman?”

He shakes my hands from him, adjusting his jacket as he stares straight into my eyes, “No, I didn’t. We got a call from a woman, a resident in your building, who spotted the deadman in the lobby. She ran out, then described you and Luce entering the building and leaving the man there as though you expected it. The moment I heard the report, I had my guys out here in minutes, but as I said, Assman seemed to already know this would happen and tagged along like some kind of junior police program.”

I believe him. Julio may be the cop who arrested Luce, wears a badge I absolutely loathe, but the man isn’t a liar. He may work for us, but it’s not by his own choice. I’m sure if he could, he’d have us all hung by our necks.

I run a hand through my hair, before nodding, “Alright, but Jared is no longer your concern, and if you’re questioned about his death later, you have witnesses who can attest that Jared was ordered off the case. You also have the federal order the prick gave to you, which by the way, I will need a copy of by the end of the day.”

I turn on my heel, sending a glare to the rest of the cops who wait for Julio’s orders before making my way back down the block. I make it to my apartment in minutes, nodding my head to the guards outside the building and the clean-up crew in the lobby before stepping onto the elevator.

I finally have Alan in my hands, and by the end of the week, Luce and I will have our girl moaning between us on sandy beaches, far away from the blood in this city.
