He punches the guy on the left and kicks the one in the middle, sending them both backward before punching the last guy in the face, knocking him out. The one he kicked quickly comes back with a hunting knife in his hand, but my man is faster. Gripping the hand with the blade, Leo pouches the man in quick succession, breaking facial bones before laying his last punch to his throat.

A grunt from my left pulls my attention, when I turn, I see Brian is bleeding badly from his stomach but he’s still fighting. I quickly run to him and duck as a fist flies by me. I shoot the leg of the bastard who is trying to stab Brian, then shoot him again, this time in the neck as he falls to the floor.

Once the guy is down, the room goes quiet. It may be that my ears have lost all hearing from shooting in such a small space, but one look around and I know it’s all over.

All the bastards who attack my family and friends are either dead or unconscious.

“Brian!” I shout when he stumbles and falls to the floor.

Hector drops down next to him and quickly applies pressure to the wound.

“Call Doc!” he shouts to no one in particular.

Leo lifts me and pulls me close to him, hugging me tightly despite the blood on his hands and clothes. I don’t even mind it.

“Where’s Manuel?” I ask, pulling away and searching the room. “I didn’t see him when I came out of the restroom.”

“Where the fuck is Doc?!” Letty shouts from the left. She’s crouched on the floor near the stage.

“Omigod!” I scream, running to my brother. He’s laying between the bodies with Letty knotting his tie around his thigh like a tourniquet.

He’s got a shit ton of blood on his face and down his neck, but I can’t find a wound, just his leg. I see a tear in his pants like he was stabbed but nothing else.

“The blade hit the main vein of his inner thigh. I don’t know where the rest of the blood came from.” Letty says as she twists the handle of her pocketknife in the knot.

The fuck? Is she some reincarnated civil war nurse?

I don’t say anything, I just turn to Manny as Jefa crouches next to me and slaps him across the face. I’m afraid of the brutal woman so I swallow my rebuke and hold back my growl. Thankfully, Manuel wakes with a grumble, spitting blood off to the side.

“Is it over?” He asks with a wide smile, his teeth covered in blood.

“Yeah,” Letty says.

We all move out of the way when a handsome man comes in carrying a leather bag over his shoulder.

“Hey, Sketch. Seems I need a couple of stitches.” Manuel says as he tries to sit up but fails. He’s lost too much blood.

“Don’t move Jefe, let me get you cleaned.” The man called Sketch says. I guess he’s my brother’s doctor.

I stand and look down, so I don’t step on anything gross, and that’s when I see the throat of the dead body to Manuel’s left.

It’s ripped out!

I cover my mouth, my stomach churning as realization hits.

Letty sees too and gags, “Oh fuck, Manuel. Did you… did youuse yourteethto tear his throat out?”

Leo wraps his arms around me and pulls me away as Manny laughs, not denying it. My brother is an unrepenting, ruthless man.

Why the fuck didn’t he use a weapon or a fucking knife? Does he become someone else at the sight of blood or in the midst of battle? I guess everyone changes when it’s kill or be killed, but what the hell?

I really have no words for that. None.

Instead, I watch Brian get carried out by our Doc and his crew.

“Will Brian be okay?” I ask Leo.

“Yeah, doll. He’ll be fine.” He cups my face, hands no longer covered in blood, and kisses me lightly before laying his forehead to mine, “We got ambushed. They were hiding in a secret stairway behind the stage. Luckily, you and Letty had just gone into the restroom when they ran in.” A shiver runs down my spine at how much worse things could have been.
