There’s nowhere to sit since everything is thrown about or soaked in some type of liquid, so I just stand back and try to look Leo over. His face, while splattered with specks of blood, seems wound free. I try to feel around his body, looking for damage but he stops me with a chuckle.

“I’m fine, baby. No blood is from me. I promise.” I see the truth in his eyes, and I breathe a sigh of relief. I’m grateful he didn’t go chewing through bodies like my brother did. “I will need to ice my hands though,” he says, bringing my thoughts back to him.

“At least that’s all. How is everyone else?” I know Hector is fine, but I never saw Nico.

“Jefa’s man is fine, he killed two men before he was able to run down the stairwell. There are several more dead bodies in there. Thanks to him and your actions, we survived.”

We stand there for a moment, until Raul, head of security rushes over to us.

“Mero. News from the northside. Sylvia’s home has been torched, no one survived.”

“Fuck!” Leo roars before turning to the nearest wall and punching through the sheetrock. I rush over and place my hands on his back as he breathes deeply. Everyone watches us, even my brother who stands, putting all his weight on his good leg.

“Who is Sylvia, amor?” I ask softly.

Leo turns to me, anguish and rage in his features, “Brian’s mother. A woman who is like a second mother to us all.”

“Oh my God, Leo. I’m so sorry.” I squeeze him tightly, trying to pull his pain into myself, “Poor Brian.”

Leo hugs me close, looking at everyone over my shoulder, “It seems we have a war on our hands.”

“What does that mean?” My voice is hushed, like we’re speaking of sin inside a place of worship.

“It means we move to the countryside mansion while we plan our strategy.”

The room is quiet for a moment, no sounds except for our breaths.

“You have all of Ibarra Cartel on your side, Compa.” My brother says with a wicked smile across his bloodied face.

“The Renzetti’s too.” Nico says stoically as he looks down at Jefa, fierce love showing brightly, “These men touched what’s mine, there’s blood to pay for that.”

Jefa nods and taps her chest twice, “Your woman helped me tonight. The Blanca Cartel is at your side, Don Alonso.”

I feel like I’m witnessing something historic. A page in history that will turn the table in favor of my Familia. Three of the top Mafia families standing together at my man’s back, promising loyalty unlike any other.

I could weep for those who didn’t witness this.
