CHPATER NINE

‘CANDY’ GUCCIHIGHWATERS

“They're just strippers, Alonso. Do you realize you'll have the greenlight on you for this? Your whole organization will crumble around your severed head—"

My fist to the motherfucker's swollen jaw cuts off his threats.

Just strippers, as if they’re nothing but objects.

After speaking to my sister earlier, I got the call from my club manager telling me a man tried to roofie one of the dancers. Turns out, he is the soldier to a Reyes Capitano, and is privy to things no one else outside of the Familia is.

If I'm going to keep Dice, which I think am, I need to know what I'll be facing. Call me fucking crazy or foolish, but I found something in Dice that I can't find anywhere else and there's no motherfucker strong enough to make me give her up until I’ve had my fill.

So here I am, in the basement of one of my clubs, with this piece of shit tied to a chair.

He was trying to roofie one of my strippers so it’s in my rights to give him a beating and it was the perfect opportunity to question him.

"They aremystrippers.Myemployees. They work for me and you crossed the line tonight. Therefore, what I do with you will be within my rights."

When he keeps his face down to the cement floor, I grip his sweaty hair and pull his head back so he can look me in my eyes, "And if someone does try to come after me for this, it'll be their fucking heads that roll. Me entiendes?"Understand me?

When he doesn't answer me, I raise my hand for more punishment but the guy screams, "No más!No more! I understand."

I shove his head to the side and step back, crossing my hands in front of me. The picture of patience. In reality, I feel my demons clawing under my skin; they’re ready and begging to cause more pain.

"If you want to walk out of here tonight, you need to answer a few questions first."

His head bobs his acceptance.

Shame. I wouldn't mind ending this cocksucker's life.

"What happened to Julian ‘Smokes’ Cabello?"

My question makes the scum's head lift as quickly as he can. I can't see past the swelling on his face, a side effect of showing disrespect in my club, but I imagine his brows would be furrowed in confusion. No doubt, he's wondering why the sudden subject change.

Thinking his punishment is over since we're no longer discussing his ill-thought-out plan of drugging my dancer, he begins to talk past the swelling of his split lips.

"The Don, Danny Reyes and Smokes Cabello used to be best friends until they had a fallout right before Smokes and his brothers were killed. Rumor around the Generals and Captains is that Don Reyes felt his position would soon be challenged by Smokes, so he put the hit on him."

This is news. I hadn't heard of the two men having any kind of fallout and I thought the Cabello Familia was weakened because of the blow they took losing Smokes. Obviously not.

If the Generals and Captains are suspicious of their Don, there must be some trouble brewing for Danny Reyes.

"This rumor, do the top ranks believe their Don would kill one of their own?"

The guy coughs and hacks on his blood and saliva so I nod to one of my guards to get him some water. Once he has a sip, I wave a dismissive hand and the guard moves back to his post.

"Yes, they believe it. They don’t trust the Don, but what can they do? Word is Danny had some sick obsession with Julian. Whispers say he wanted to be him.” The guy coughs some more, head lolling to the side as he looks at me through his swollen eyes, “If Smokes had decided to challenge Danny for power, all the top ranks would have b-backed him. Why do y-you ask this?"

I pull my cuff up a little and check the time, I don't want to be late picking up Dice for our first date. That girl is skittish as it is, and I have a feeling she wouldn't give me another shot if I fuck this up.

Fifteen minutes to get to her place.

"I ask because I can. One last question, are there any living relatives of Julian?"

The guy shakes his head with a delirious laugh, a bloody string of spit hangs from his lip, "Don Reyes called for a blackout. You know what that means, no?"

Of course, I know what a fucking blackout is. It’s rarely used, and it must be voted upon first. Why? Because a blackout is bigger than a hit. It is an order to kill every living relative in the offender’s family. Men, women, children, babies, elderly, the fucking pets… every person of the bloodline dies.
