Mrs. Alonso comes into the kitchen as I put my mother on hold. Standing, I walk closer to the door and shout, "Who is it?"

"It's Hector, open up." The muffled male voice comes through. I look to Mrs. Alonso as she comes over to the door.

"I thought you left with Leo?" She says through the door as she punches in the code for the lock. I try to stop her but as the door opens, a man with a ski mask shoves it further open and knocks Leo's mother down.

I don't hesitate; I lunge for the gun on the island tabletop and slide the barrel back to load a round into the chamber.

I may not be from Leo's world, but I know how to cut a bitch. Or in this case, shoot an asshole.

I lift the gun and squeeze the trigger, grazing the bastard on the arm as he dives for the floor on the other side of the island. I rush around it with my gun held out in front of me, but as I round the corner; I take my finger off the trigger.

The man has Leo's mother pulled over his body with his gun to her temple.

"Put the gun down, asshole. Our guards will be here any moment."

The man slowly stands with Joann held against his body, shielding him against my gun. His arm bleeds from the wound I inflicted, but it doesn't keep him from holding the gun to her head.

I took training classes when I got my permit to carry but I’m in no way a marksman. If I try and shoot this fucker, I will most likely hit Joann too. I can’t do that. I just hope I can bluff long enough that one of the guards will show up.

"They would be here already if there were any. Put your gun down or I'll kill this bitch."

I don't know how true that is, but it seems he may be right. Where the hell are the guards?

"What do you want?" I ask through gritted teeth as I make a show of pointing the gun toward the ground.

"Put the fucking gun down now, Cabello."

Joann shakes her head, but it's barely noticeable.

"You have the wrong place. There is no Cabello here. Please, just let her go and get out of here."

The man's angry eyes harden further as he shakes Leo’s mother with a growl, "Put your hand up, Alonso." When Joann doesn't follow his instructions, he screams in her ear, "NOW!"

Shaking and whimpering, Joann lifts her hand up with her palm facing out and the man pulls the gun from her head and shoots through her hand.

Joann and I both scream and I immediately drop the gun, "You fucking bastard!"

With my gun dropped, the man quickly shoves Joann away from him and grabs me. I fight with him, not giving a shit that he has a gun. I rip at his mask and punch wildly.

"Run, Joann. Go get help, run!"

I'm kicking and screaming while trying to take the gun from him, but he grabs me by my hair and yanks me down to my knees. With little effort, the man drags me out of the door and down a flight of stairs, banging my body along the unforgiving steps, before pulling me back to my feet.

My scalp feels like it’s bleeding and my body feels like it’s broken but I continue to struggle.

When we’re at the edge of the next flight of stairs, the bastard tires of my fighting and shoves me.

I fall and roll down each cement step. By the time I stop at the bottom, I don’t know which way is up and which way is down but the moment the grunts and panting asshole grabs me by my bicep, I snap.

“Your lying mother is next, you little rotten cunt.”

It’s like his words, which were meant to cut, turned me into a raging demon. Threaten me, harm me, even kill me, but when it comes to my mother, I will rain fire and brimstone on a motherfucker.

I wrap both of my hands around the wrist of his hand with the gun and pull it forward while twisting. Fast and hard, I yank his elbow down onto my shoulder, hoping for it to snap.

Of course, it doesn't. But at least the gun isn't pointing at my head.

I spin in his hold and do what I've seen in movies; I slam my forehead to his nose. That fucking hurt, I think I did it wrong because my nose hurts like hell but the guy stumbles back.
