Ignoring the throb in my face and stars in my eyes, I shove him against the wall as a shot rings out from his gun. I'm still holding his hand with my left, but once he's against the wall, he punches me in my ribs.

"Arrgh!" My painful scream bounces off the walls, but I continue to fight. Thank God for adrenaline.

I swing my right elbow as hard as I can at his face, and I hear a crunch that spurs me on.

Finally, he drops the gun and I swing my fist, hitting his broken nose again and again until my vision darkens and my head spins.

I let him go and scoop up the gun before turning back and shooting the prick in the stomach.

I don't wait around or check his pulse like a moron; I turn and stumble back up the stairs.

Before I get halfway up the stairs, the apartment door swings open, and guards rush out. One sees me and lifts me from the step with his arm around my waist and my right arm over his shoulders.

I whimper in pain as he carefully guides me up the stairs and into the penthouse.

The guard takes me to the sofa where an older man who looks like Santa’s cousin, is looking over an unconscious Joann.

“Mrs. Alonso." I croak.

“She's okay, ma'am. The bullet went through the Pollicis muscles."

When I look at him in confusion, he speaks plainly, "The muscles between the thumb and forefinger. Let me have a look at you."

The guard helps me to sit and reaches for the gun, but I don’t relinquish it. He nods his head but stays by my side.

The doctor, at least I assume he’s one, pulls a small pen flashlight from his breast pocket and shines it in my eyes. I hiss at the blinding light and try to turn away but the room spins, and I almost topple off the couch.

“Woah, I got you miss,” The doc says as he and the guard hold me up, “Let’s have you lay back, hm?”

“I was dragged down the stairs by my hair, then I was pushed down another flight. I don’t think my body can take more movement.”

But even as I speak the words, they carefully lay me back against the cushions that feel like bricks against my ribs.

I begin to nod off as Doc lifts my shirt and examines my battered body, but the assholes keep waking me up to badger me with questions.

It isn’t until I hear the guard speaking that I force myself to open my eyes and keep them open.

"We got her, Mero. She's safe in the penthouse, Doc is looking over her. Raul is currently changing the code and we have men sweeping the entire building."

I can hear the buzz of Leo’s furious voice coming through the line and I don’t blame him. Where the fuck was everyone? This shit should have been prevented.

“I’m not sure Boss, I was on my usual patrol when comms suddenly went out. No one noticed until I tried getting a hold of Miguel… Yes, sir I understand.”

The man walks over to me and hands me the phone before stepping back to guard the door.

I put the phone to my ear and hiss as the doctor pushes on my ribs.

"Dice, are you okay? Talk to me,amor." Leo sounds angry, murderous, and relieved.

"I'm fine. A little banged up and a whole lot of pissed off, but I'm fine. Did you get Letty?"

I'm not going to tell Leo the full extent of my injuries. The last thing anyone needs is the Boss killing everyone in his sights.

As angry as I am at the guards for letting that piece of shit slip through, I feel like I should have stopped Joann from opening that door. I should have shot the asshole in the head. I shouldn't have dropped my gun.

So manyI should have'srunning through my head and I'm getting angrier by the second, but I breathe and focus on Leo’s deep voice.

"Yeah, I got her. She is safe and unharmed. I'm down the street now, but I wanted to hear your voice myself. I'm going to make these fuckers pay, I promise."

I'm surprised that I find comfort in those words, but I have been called a vengeful bitch once or twice in my life.

"You believe me, baby?" Leo's deep voice cuts through my thoughts.

"Yeah, I believe you."
