CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

‘VIOLENT’ CAROLESDAUGHTER

After speaking with Manuel and giving him the run down on Reyes Familia, I ended the call just as Hector returned with Raquel in tow.

“Are you sure you should have given Ibarra such information, Mero? What if he feels like he needs to keep Dice, his sister, safe from harm by taking her from here?”

My teeth grind as I walk over to the small bar in the corner of my office and pour myself a drink. I swallow down the burning amber before I reply to Brian. I know he is only doing what a second in command does but questioning me will not be tolerated.

“Did you hear me even remotely mention Dice? Did I give any such details away?” He grinds his own teeth, but he knows better than to mouth off. Best friend or not, I am Don for a reason. “Even if I had mentioned her. No one, and I do mean no-fucking-one, will take her from me.”

“When is Ibarra coming up for a visit?” Hector asks, breaking the ice with Brian and me.

Hector has always been the referee between us. Brian and I don’t fight as often as we used to but we’re both hot heads. Bumping heads is an unavoidable issue, but we never let it affect us or our friendship.

In fact, the three of us challenge each other daily and it’s why we’re the most notorious men in Chicago.

I clap Brian on the shoulder as I reply, “He’ll be here in three weeks. He’ll be bringing his people with him. Aside from this Reyes bullshit, Ibarra wants to do some new business ventures with his partner.”

Hector tosses his head back, “Newest partner? I don’t know if that’s such a good idea. Do we know anything about them and what sort of business is this unknown man looking for?”

Me and Brian smirk at one another. Hector hadn’t been in the room when Ibarra told us of his new alliance.

“Not a man, but a woman. Jefa Blanca will be here with him and as for business… it looks like the Cartel Queen needs connections only we can provide.”

Hector lets out a whistle, “I don’t know about her, man. I’ve heard some fucked up shit. A couple of months back, I heard she sent care packages to the families of a few traitors… inside the gift-wrapped boxes were literally body skins of the men she killed.”

Brian coughs in surprise, “The fuck? Damn, she’s wild as fuck. Talk about some Buffalo Bill shit. I wonder if she’s single?”

I shake my head at my whacked-out brother, “No. She’s not single you fucking lunatic. Her man is just as fucked in the head too. Nico the Cold Renzetti. Ring any bells?”

I leave Hector and Brian discussing the psycho duo and head to my guest room where Doc put my mother.

The only reason I’m open to negotiations is because of that craziness Jefa Blanca is known for. She is her father’s daughter, and she is the kind of woman who can lead in a man’s world with the strength and diligence her father was known for.

I enter my mother’s room and spot my sister checking the bandages wrapped around mother’s hand. Thankfully, they’re not soaked with blood. Doc took good care of her.

“How is she doing?”

Letty looks up with angry tears leaking from her eyes, “Good. She’s high as a kite though. She just told me that it was her who accidently killed my bird when I was eight. Sorry I blamed you.”

I chuckle at that, “Yeah, well now you owe me for cutting the chain on my bike. Your tantrums were outrageous.”

We grow quiet for a moment while we watch our mother sleep through her pain.

“This won’t sit like this, Letty. I will make sure they suffer far worse. I promise.”

Letty nods her head before looking up at me, “They need to beg for death.”

There’s not much in this life that can put such hateful words in my sister’s mouth but touch her family and she will bathe in the blood of her foes.

“That’s what I’m going down in the basement to do. While I’m gone, please keep an eye on Dice. She suffered a mild concussion, and her body is pretty banged up. Make sure to wake her every so often, okay? If there’s any issues, call me right away.”

"Okay, I will."

I leave the room and find Hector and Brian waiting for me. Together, we make our way down to the basement.

I bought this basement when I moved into this high-rise building. I made the owner an offer above anything reasonable and had it completely soundproofed.
