CHAPTER THIRTY-ONE

‘US AND THEM’ DEREK POPE

“Mero.” Hector’s voice comes through the line after a couple of rings.

“Get the cleanup crew out to Waves of the Lake.”

I can’t keep the growl out of my voice. I sent Dice and Raquel back home with my men because I was close to turning her ass red. She recklessly put herself and her mother in danger. Needlessly as well, since I had men guarding the only exit.

Even if I hadn’t, even if Danny would have gotten away, Dice should never have risked herself and everyone around her.

“Already on it, boss. I’m also pulling security camera footage. What would you have me do with his body?”

I smirk. Danny isn’t dead, yet. Out of the clip Raquel emptied, only four hit the man. Two in the shoulder, one on his forearm and one through his jaw. Lucky for us, the twenty-two caliber bullets weren’t fatal.

“The pig is still alive for now.”

The clicking of the keyboard Hector is working on stops with my words, followed by a bark of laughter, “The fucker will wish he had died. Do I get the basement set up for his stay?”

“No. We don’t know what kind of retaliation, if any, we will get. Though, from what Jefa has been able to find while having drinks with the Generals, no one will miss the old bastard. Either way, I’d rather keep it away from my wife and unborn child. Get the docks ready, he’ll be swimming later.”

“Got it. I’ll have Doc sent there as well. I’ve already spoken with the chief; all police units will be kept from the area until everything is combed and cleaned.” I can hear Hector typing quickly on his computer, pulling up the security footage from the area.

“Good. Get a message to the Reyes generals. Their attendance is demanded tomorrow at Club Sucia. If they do not show up, I will take it as a sign of disrespect, and I will bring a war they’re not ready for.”

“Got it, Mero.

Hanging up with Hector, I turn and walk over to the cemetery Sexton. He’s being questioned by Raul. As head of security, I know he’ll find out if the man betrayed us.

He turns as I approach, “Mero.”

I nod my head to the caretaker, “If he did wrong, take him along with the shooter to the docks. Brian will be there. For now, I’m heading back to the penthouse. You got it handled?”

“Always, boss. I’ll call you when everything is cleared out.”

Clapping him on the shoulder, I eye the Sexton. He’s trembling and sweating, even with the dropping temperatures. It may just be the fear me and my men strike in the man or the shit he just witnessed, but I’m not in a very trusting mood.

Turning back to Raul, “If he helped Reyes in anyway, I don’t give a fuck if he lit a cigarette for the bastardo, I want you to deglove his cock and send him home. Got it?”

“Si, Mero.”

Turning, I make my way to the car and climb in.

I’m still fuming, ready to bash someone’s face in until I run out of breath. When I saw Dice driving away, and turning the corner, I felt like my world stopped. Scenarios played in my mind as to why she was driving away. I feared someone climbed into the car and was forcing her to run.

Running to her felt like one of those dreams where you have to fist the grass in order to run faster. My legs felt like they were made of lead, and the distance between me and my woman seemed to stretch further apart with each step I took.

I’ve never felt fear like I did today, a fear so strong it was almost paralyzing.

When she turned the corner, back breaks locked and tires skidding, I felt like I’d fucking die and take everyone motherfucker with me. I didn’t give a flying fuck if I killed my own men, I just wanted to kill someone.

This is why my anger is still pumping through me. Rage not just for Dice’s actions but for the Reyes Don. If not for him, Dice never would have felt the reckless need to stop the piece of cunt from running away.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m fucking impressed with the tenacity of my woman, of the wicked desire for her enemy’s blood, but I will never be okay with her on the front lines.

Call me a caveman or whatever the fuck, but I want to tie her ass up in the closet with chains and bolt the fucking door closed then weld the locks.

“Fucking calm down,” I sigh to myself as I loosen my tie and unbutton the top of my dress shirt.
