“I’d rather thank him.” He sighed.

“What?”

“It’s not good for a pack to be spread out and isolated. You’re home now, and home you’ll stay.”

I shot to my feet. “I don’t think so. I think it’s better for everyone if I leave as soon as the—”

“I will order you to stay if I have to,” he snapped. “It’s been too long since you’ve spent time among the pack.”

“Then order me, because I’m out of here the moment I hear what’s on that will.” I shrugged.

“Fine.” He sighed. “You’re to stay in town until I say otherwise. Do not leave without my permission.”

My nostrils flared, and my toes curled in my sneakers. If he wasn’t my alpha, I’d have killed him on the spot for trying to order me around.

“In fact, I’d prefer it if you stayed—”

“Don’t.” I snarled. “I will not stay in this house.”

He narrowed his eyes wondering if he should push the issue, and then shook his head. “As you wish, but don’t leave town.”

“Alright, now you wanted me here to train. Training is happening outside. Is there anything else you need from me, Alpha, or can I get on with it.”

“Where have you been staying?” He asked, his tone shifting into something more conversational.

“With friends,” I said.

“Human friends or another pack?”

I fought the urge to roll my eyes. “Human friends. I’m still loyal to this pack, regardless of who runs it.”

“Hmm, I guess we shall have to see about that. Now go outside. Jamie is waiting for you,” he said, gesturing to the door behind me.

A weight sank into my gut. “What?”

“I’ve asked Jamie to oversee your training today, to test your skills,” he said, walking around to sit behind his desk. “I thought you’d be pleased. You were friends in school, weren’t you?”

“More like the exact opposite,” I said through my teeth.

He pouted in confusion. “Hmm, I guess I was mistaken. Well, you two can spend this time settling your differences then.”

I closed my eyes and took a deep breath. “Wonderful.”

“Go, before he comes looking for you,” he instructed, and the wolf inside me snapped to attention. I turned and I walked out of the room, giving him the finger over my shoulder.

Following the hall to the back of the house, I stepped out onto the back staircase and winced. The sun was powerful and warm, and the smell of wolf sweat was overwhelming. Squinting, I scanned my eyes over the open grass.

Wolves sparred in both human and animal form at different points across the lawn. Mats were laid out to create makeshift rings, and there were spaces where others practiced their weapons handling.

Maria was in the midst of sparring with Dillon towards the far end of the field, but before I could go to see how she was doing, I scented a new presence behind me. I felt him reaching for me, and let my body react.

Turning quickly, I grabbed his hand, pulling him forward, and used my weight to throw him over my shoulder down the stairs, into the grass.

Jamie landed with a loud thump, and he coughed, rolling over onto his side. “Nicely done.”

“I don’t need training.”

He nodded, getting himself to his feet, and brushed the dirt from his pants. “I’m sure you don’t, but I’m under orders. So, let’s go to the sparring mats.”
