Her head snapped up and she threw her phone down on the table beside her. “Holy shit, you’re awake. How are you feeling?”

“Better.” I said, doing a quick assessment of the pain in my sides. The burning was gone, and I wasn’t sweating anymore, but attempting to shift in the bed sent sharp pain through my chest.

“Don’t get up, you were nearly eviscerated a few days ago. You need to rest,” she said, pushing down gently on my shoulders.

“Yup, I’m not mov—wait, days ago? How long have I been out?” I asked frowning up at her.

“About a week,” she said, sinking sheepishly back into her chair.

I jerked up into a seated position. “What?”

“Woah, careful,” she warned.

To my left someone let out a loud gasp, and a chair clattered as Jamie shot up right in his chair. “What? What’s happen—Snow. You’re awake.”

I glared at him. “I’ve been unconscious for a week?”

“Um, yeah.” He nodded. “You were hurt bad by that thing in the woods.”

“Shit.” I groaned dropping my head into my hands.

“What is it? What’s wrong?” The two of them asked in unison.

“I’ve been on my ass for a week, doing nothing,” I said, letting myself lay back on the bed. My chest was on fire but being weak in front of Adrian was the last thing I needed. He was exactly the type of wolf who’d take full advantage of that, and so would Ronnie.

“I should get Hamish,” Maria said, shifting nervously.

“I’ll stay with her,” Jamie said.

Maria nodded and got up walking out of sight. The bed they had me in was surrounded in dark green curtains. I could only guess that I was still in the infirmary.

I turned to Jamie once I was sure she’d walked out of earshot. “Why are you here?”

“I…” his mouth clamped shut, his jaw twitching with the effort. “You went down hard. What do you remember about the attack?”

I rolled my eyes. “I remember what you told me in the tower, and then we went after the skeleton. After that…things get dark and blurry.”

“Skeleton?” He frowned. “We went after a…I don’t know what to call it. A demon or something. Dillon calls them smoke monsters.”

“A smoke monster?” I pursed my lips. “There was a skeleton at the center.”

“So that’s how you killed it. You could see it’s core.” He sat back in his chair and scratched at his stubble. “I wonder why you could, and I couldn’t.”

“Might have something to do with my mother,” I said, feeling the heaviness of sleep drawing my eyelids closed again.

“Ronnie?” Jamie snorted. “She won’t go near the woods without Adrian.”

“Not her,” I said, opening my eyes again. “Turns out Ronnie isn’t my mother.”

His eyebrows rose. “When did you figure that out?”

“You really have to ask?” I arched an aching eyebrow at him and sighed. “You were there for the aftermath.”

“Oh.” He swallowed visibly.

“Had quite a few surprises at the reading of the will,” I said, staring off into space. “But I’m not sure any of that compares to what you said in the tower.”

He held a finger to his lips. “Not here. Once you’re better, you’ll have to stop by my place. I don’t want the wrong people to…overhear.”
