“Overhear what?” Maria asked, slipping back through the curtain.

“Overhear him thanking me for saving his ass,” I said, covering quickly.

“Oh.” She smiled weakly. “Well, Hamish is on his way. He’ll be here in—”

Abruptly the curtain behind her was shunted open. Hamish stepped aside looking pale, and Adrian strode into view with murder in his eyes.

Stopping at the end of my bed, he glared at me. “How did you do it? How did you kill the beast?”

I arched my eyebrow again. “Easy, Gaston. You make it sound like I did something bad.”

“You did something that was impossible,” he spat through his teeth. “So, I demand an answer. How did you kill the creature?”

I pressed my lips into a flat line and exhaled a long breath, glancing at Jamie before I responded. “I don’t know. The night’s a blur.”

“I don’t believe you.”

“I remember jumping at it, and then there was nothing but pain,” I said, which wasn’t a lie. I did remember jumping at the animal, and then feeling pain, I was just omitting a lot of things in between.

“Tell me,” he demanded, slapping his hands down on the metal foot board.

Struggling to sit up, I leveled a dark gaze at him. “I told you. I don’t know how I did it. I just did.”

He stood upright and glanced between Jamie and I a few times. “Fine. It’s time you got your work assignment anyway. You…” he jabbed a finger toward Jamie’s chest. “And you…” he pointed at me. “Are going to figure out what those creatures are, and you are going to send them all back where they came from before the next full moon. Is that understood?”

Jamie nodded solemnly. “Yes, Sir.”

I bared my teeth. “Sure, why not. I’ll clean up your mess for you.”

Adrian glared and marched out of sight, shoving past Hamish as he went.

Hamish looked down at me pursing his lips. “I’d be careful there, Girl. You’re poking a bear in wolf’s clothing, and that one in particular, has got some nasty claws.”
