“Are you sure you want to do this now?” Jamie asked for the third time as we walked up the driveway to the Alpha house. “You’re still healing.”

“It needs to be done,” I said.

We’d outlined our plans for the skeletons and made of list of places where we could start looking for witches based on Annie’s notes. The next step was starting our preparations, setting up traps in the woods, and the only place we could get them easily was in the storage shed behind the Alpha house.

“I agree, but I can set up the traps on my own. You need to be careful. I don’t want you to hurt yourself worse. Maria would kill me,” he said.

“I’m fine.”

“Fine?” He laughed. “I can hear you’re starting to wheeze.”

“It’s hot, that’s all,” I said, glancing up at the overcast sky.

“Well, it looks like it’s about to rain,” he said. “So, it should cool down soon.”

The front door to the house opened as we started around the left side passing between the med tent and the house. The scent of an angry wolf filled my nose, and I turned just in time to see Ronnie hurtling towards me in her wolf form. I threw my hands up to shield myself, but she never hit. Opening my eyes, I saw nothing but Jamie’s back as he held her away from me by the maw.

“Ronnie…enough!” He grunted, twisting her to the side to throw her away from him.

Ronnie rebounded snarling loudly and tried to hit me again, but this time I was ready. The moment she came in range, I punched her right in the nose.

Collapsing back in surprise, Ronnie yelped, and skittered backward into the side of the metal strut holding up the med tent.

“Are you okay?” Jamie asked.

“For now,” I said, shaking out my hand. “But she’s not a shark. She’s not going to be stunned for long.”

“What’s going on?” Adrian demanded appearing from around the back of the building.

“She’s trying to kill Eve,” Jamie said, pushing me carefully behind him as Ronnie began to rise.

“Ronnie!” Adrian shouted, charging up to her. “Stop!”

She snapped her head around snarling at him and he squared his shoulders at her. The power of the Alpha rippled through the pack bond, and Ronnie whimpered, shaking her head. Her paws scratched at the dirt, and then her body crumpled to the ground as he forced her submission. She let out a loud howl, and a light flashed over her body as she returned to her human form gasping for air.

“No!” Ronnie sobbed. “She has to die. She can’t take everything from me. She can’t I won’t let it happen.”

“Jamie, take the girl away from here,” Adrian said, his eyes trained on his wife.

“Yes, Sir. We…we’ve got a plan for the things in the woods. We’re going to—”

“Fill me in later. Just get her out of here,” he snapped, pointing a finger at us.

Jamie looped an arm around my back, and corralled me close to his chest, leading to the back of the house, out of Adrian’s line of sight.

“How’s your hand? Is it broken?” He asked, once we were out of ear shot.

“It’s fine,” I said, wiggling my fingers.

He nodded and dropped his arm from my back as a few of the pups came wandering in from the woods. Their eyes fell on me, and then Jamie. Each one paled as they registered who he was, and then took double steps to hurry past us.

Jamie made no sign that he noticed. He just pulled a set of keys from his pocket and let himself into the equipment shed. He pushed open the door and gestured for me to go ahead of him. I stepped inside and he clicked on the light. I hadn’t been here in ages. Calling it a shed was being conservative by a mile. The ceiling was at least thirty or forty feet high. There were shelves full of boxes, food, supplies, and records stacked from to the back.

“This thing has certainly gotten bigger since I left,” I said, following behind him.

“Adrian’s been hoarding shit for years. Says it’s to protect us. From what, he’s never said. The only good thing about it from what I can tell is that it has what we need to set traps in the woods.”
