“We need to make sure we keep the pack clear of where we’re setting these things,” I said.

“I’ll let Adrian know what we’re doing later. We’re gonna need a few more wolves to make it work anyway,” he said, opening a gate that divided the back of the shed from the rest of the supplies.

“Tell me now,” Adrian said, appearing behind me.

I spun on my heal, and it took everything I had not to slap him. “You scared the shit out of me.”

“My apologies,” he said, passing me over with a cold deadpan glare.

“We found out what the things in the forest are,” Jamie said, glancing past Adrian at me, and back again. “They’re the walking dead.”

Adrian squared his shoulders and crossed his hands behind him. “Explain.”

“They’re part of a spell the witches created centuries ago,” I said. “To kill the werewolves.”

He snorted, glancing over his shoulder at me. “Witches don’t exist.”

“Oh, they exist,” I sighed. “They exist, they’re rare, but they exist. Annie had records of them. She taught me about them.”

“Annie did what?” His eyebrows rose and he looked back and forth between us. “Where are these records?”

“It doesn’t matter,” I said.

Adrian glared at me. “Where are they?”

“I have them, that’s all that matters,” I said. “I figured out what the things in the woods are, and now all we have to do is lay some traps. We can destroy them, and then find the witch who brought them here.”

“Traps? What kind of traps?” He asked, turning back to where Jamie stood with his hand resting on a box full of explosives.

“We need to make them go boom,” he said, flashing the alpha a smile.

“You want to put bombs down in our hunting grounds? Have you lost your mind? What if a pup runs into one?” He asked.

“That’s why we need you to keep them at bay,” Jamie said. “Keep everyone here and let us take a few of the wolves out to corral the creatures in the right direction.”

“No. I won’t put more wolves at risk. Just the two of you. I told you to handle this,” he said. “I expect it done.”

“Adrian, you can’t expect us to handle them all by ourselves, that’d be a suicide mission,” Jamie said.

“I’m not sending my pack out into the woods when you’re planning to set off explosives. If something goes wrong that will put loyal wolves in danger…” Adrian said.

“Loyal wolves.” I shook my head. “By sending us out there alone, you’re putting two loyal wolves in danger.”

“You? Loyal?” He laughed. “That remains to be seen. Kill these creatures, and maybe then I’ll believe you’re loyal.”

I glared at him. “So that’s what this is about. Send us out there alone, and we either get rid of the problem for you or die trying. Either way you get rid ofonenuisance.”

“I don’t have to explain myself to you,” he said.

“What about Jamie? He’s your enforcer. He’s loyal. Why send him out there? Why not order me to go alone?” I asked, narrowing my eyes. If he was doubting Jamie’s loyalty trying to find out what happened to Annie would get a hell of a lot harder.

“Be cause I need this problem taken care of. Jamie is one of my most capable wolves. No matter what happens to you, I trust him to be sure things go right out there, and these beasts are destroyed,” he said.

I glanced at Jamie and back to Adrian. “Fine. We’ll clean up your mess. Just keep the wolves out of the woods tonight.”

“I’ll keep them safe. You worry about doing your job. Is that understood?” he asked, turning towards me fully.

“Yes, Sir,” I said, stepping aside to let him pass.
