Waking up, wrapped in a black jersey sheet, it took me a second to figure out where I was. I groaned and pulled a pillow over my face. I’d slept with Jamieson Hart. I hadn’t just kissed him. No, I’d slept with him.

I could still feel the spots where his fingers had gripped me tightest, where his teeth had left marks on my skin. The thought of it made my insides tremble. I’d slept with him, and I wanted to do it again.

Wrapped in his arms, feeling him burn beside me, I couldn’t help but recognize the power of his touch. I knew what that power meant. Every wolf was taught to look for it in their partners.

Wolves that found their mates were stronger, faster, and more respected by the pack, forever bound together. Mating was for life, and when it happened that power could not be ignored.

Sitting up in the bed, I sighed, dropping my head into my hands. Most people loved their mates. Their bonds were fierce, and they were loyal to each other, but Jamie? History aside, I barely knew the man let alone his wolf.

A faint whistling sound caught my attention, and I looked up searching for the source. Jamie’s bedroom was sparce. Just a large king size bed, a dark wood dresser against the wall at the foot of the bed, and a desk beneath the window of the wall to my right. He didn’t have any pictures out, or knickknacks. Just the essentials.

Beside the dresser, one of the French doors, blocking his bedroom off from the rest of the house, sat open casting a ring of light across the ground. The whistling was coming from another room in the house.

I started to swing my legs over the edge of the bed to go in search of my clothes, and I froze. Sitting on the bedside table next to me was a folded note, a glass of water, and a bottle of Tylenol. I unfolded the note, and my cheeks burned.

Good morning,

I’m sorry for leaving you to wake up alone, but you looked so peaceful, and I had to take a call. When you’re ready, I’ve laid your jeans out on the end of the bed and pulled a shirt out that you can wear since I destroyed your other one last night. Get dressed and meet me in the kitchen. I think we need to talk.

Glancing around, I took two of the medication he’d left me, and sighed. My pants and a black oversized tee shirt were sitting on the end of the bed just as he’d said. A tee-shirt that smelled exactly like him when I slipped it on. Leather and rainwater. A walking thunderstorm.

Fully dressed, but barefoot, I padded over to the door, soft and as quiet as I could. The blue tile of the kitchen floor was cold beneath my feet. Jamie stood with his back to me, pouring coffee into a mug. I heard him sniff the air, and his head lifted.

“Good Morning,” he said, without turning around.

“Morning.” I croaked, rocking my weight back on my heals. He was dressed in a pair of plaid pajama bottoms and a soft grey tee-shirt. His hair looked mussed, and it made my heart ache.

“Would you like some coffee? Dinner wasn’t exactly salvageable after we abandoned it last night.” He chuckled as he finally turned around, brandishing a mug.

“Please.” I nodded, inching my way to the round table that sat wedged in the corner of the room.

Jamie smiled and poured me my own cup before moving to a sliding glass door just beyond the table. “Let’s sit out here. It’s a nice morning. There’s a cool breeze.”

I nodded and followed after him as he stepped out onto a small porch at the back of the house. He handed me one of the mugs he held, and then sank down into a low leather chair that sat positioned perfectly to look out into the back yard.

I sat down in the chair opposite him and folded my legs beneath me. The porch was fully enclosed, but he had the windows up and the breeze wafting in off the ocean felt glorious. I closed my eyes and relaxed into the seat. “This is a nice place you’ve got here.”

“Thank you,” he said. “Annie actually helped me get it.”

I blinked at him. “What?”

“I was struggling to find a place, and there a few offers in when I found out about this one. She talked to the previous owner, and voilà. Here I am.”

“She was always good with things like that.” I nodded, letting my thoughts stray to what had happened at Gregor’s and in the garden. There were so many things rattling around in my skull, I didn’t want to think about any of them anymore. I just wanted to go back to bed and sleep until it all disappeared.

“I know we need to talk about what happened last night, but maybe we should start with something lighter?” He suggested, shifting around in his seat.

“Like what?” I laughed. “The weather?”

He narrowed his eyes at me, smiling. “You are a surprise you know that.”

I smiled at him. “I take great pride in being unpredictable.”

His smile faltered, and he scratched his neck, letting his eyes wander back to the middle distance between us. “Are you okay with what happened last night?”
