My shoulders tensed. “Was? Is she dead?”

“I don’t know, to be honest with you. Your mother disappeared about ten years ago. Just up and vanished. Hasn’t been seen or heard from since.”

My nostrils flared. The woman smelled of sage, thyme, and oats. I could detect a faint sweat on her skin, but none of it read as fear. She wasn’t afraid, and she wasn’t lying to me.

“Did she tell you why we were coming?” Jamie asked, when I fell quiet.

“She said something bad was going to happen not far from here, and that you’d come looking for answers. But I can’t give them to you.”

Something about her response sounded off. “You can’t give me answers, or you wont?”

Her lips curled in a smile. “A bit of both I suppose.”

“Alright.” Jamie groaned. “Let’s start with the why you can’t part.”

“I can’t because I don’t have the answers. I don’t know how to stop what’s happening to your people, but even I did I’m also under covenant. Our leader has sworn us all to secrecy,” she said.

“But that’s not why you won’t tell us, is it?” I asked, sensing more to her tone.

“Your mother was good at reading people too.” Sarah smiled. “You’re right, there is another reason why I won’t help you.”

“And what’s that?” Jamie asked, tensing at my side.

Sarah’s eyes narrowed on him. She took an exaggerated breath, and something itched behind my eyes as her face began to shimmer. Her skin shifted, morphing like melting clay and for jagged red lines appeared along the side of her face.

“Your kind has been killing ours for decades. It was a werewolf that murdered my sister. Why Selene thought I’d just let that go, I’ll never understand,” Sarah said, setting her teacup down on the table beside her.

I leaned forward, resting my elbows on my knees. “We don’t mean you any harm.”

“I’m sure you think that’s true.” Sarah smiled. “But that doesn’t matter to me. You will pay for the sins of your father. Just as your ancestors have made us pay for ours.”

Jamie doubled over grabbing his head. “Ahhhhh!”

“No!” I gasped, clutching his jacket as he slipped off the couch. “Stop it. You’re hurting him.”

Sarah laughed. “That’s the idea.”

“Eve, Run,” Jamie gasped, looking up at me. His face was red, the veins thick across his forehead.

“I’m honestly surprised,” Sarah said. “You should be on the floor too. Your mother’s blood must be protecting you.”

I glared up at her. “Stop this. Now.”

“Why should I? Your kind never stopped when we asked.” She shrugged, getting up out of her chair.

Jamie curled in on himself. “Eve, please. Just go.”

“Not a chance,” I said, rising to my feet.

My wolf roiled beneath my skin, flooding its strength through my muscles and sinew. My hands flexed, and I moved fast as lightning.

Sarah tried to raise her hand to mutter a spell, but my fingers closed around her throat, and I shoved her back, pinning her to the wall. “Break the spell. Let him go.”

“Or what?” She spat. “You’ll kill me.”

“Oh, believe me,” I snarled. “I can do a lot worse.”

My nails throbbed as they sharpened, stretching out to mirror my wolf’s claws. Sarah hissed, but never lost her smile. “So much like your mother.”
