“Eve! Run!” Jamie hollered in the distance.

“Yes,” Sarah croaked. “Eve. Run.”

I narrowed my eyes at her, and she lifted her hand level with the side of my head. A burst of wind hit me square in the ear, and I cried out in pain, collapsing to my knees.

“No!” Jamie roared, and out of my good ear I heard the crack of his bones as his wolf tried to force the change.

“Your mother was foolish,” Sarah raged, looming over me. “To love an animal. You’re not our savior, or some kind of all powerful being. You’re nothing but an abomination.”

Hot pain exploded through my skull, and my back arched as my muscles and body tensed. I tried to fight it off. To push it away somehow, but I could barely breathe.

In the distance, I heard Jamie crying out for me, screaming my name. A shadow moved in the distance beyond him, and a new voice broke through the screams.“Arrête!”

A wave of foreign energy washed over the room and the pain in my body vanished. My muscles relaxed, and my head lulled as I reached across the floor to find Jamie’s hand outstretched for mine. Our fingers curled together, and his body relaxed.

“Alice, what are you doing? I had them at my mercy!” Sarah shouted, clutching her hand to her chest.

“You know the rules, Grandmother. We aren’t allowed to hurt her. If Claudette found out she’d murder you on the spot,” Alice said, walking into the room. “What were you thinking?”

“I was thinking that I finally had the chance to get some vengeance. These people kill our kind like we’re cattle,” Sarah said, stepping over me again.

“There hasn’t been an official witch hunter in two decades. We haven’t done anything to you,” I spat up at her.

Jamie’s fingers tightened on my hand, as he inched closer to me. “Not yet anyway.”

“You see. They are violent animals. We need to put them down,” Sarah said.

“No, Grandmother. They need to be left alive,” Alice said, and something clicked in the back of my mind.

“It’s you,” I said, struggling to sit up. “You’re the witch from the woods.”

Alice looked me and made a quick gesture with her hand, and my next sentence fell short in my throat. “Stand down, Grandmother. You two follow me. I think we need to talk.”

Jamie glanced at me, and then got to his feet, glaring at Sarah over my shoulder. “Why should we trust you?”

“Because I spared both of your lives in the woods the other night,” she said.

“So is this Claudette the one—”

“Don’t say her name. It will draw too much attention,” Alice hissed. “Follow me and I’ll get us somewhere we can talk safely. I’m sure you have questions.”

Jamie looked at me. “I go where you go.”

I clenched my fists and stepped past him, muttering under my breath. “Stay close and watch out for rabbit holes.”
