My wolf’s power rippled up my spine. I felt the prickling of the change spreading along my fingers, up my wrists, into my forearms and shoulders. Something popped behind my nose, throbbing as the bones cracked and reshaped. My legs gave out, and I fell to all fours, crying out as the bones in my hands shattered and reformed into smaller limbs, shrinking into paws. My shoulders popped out of place and then a great rumbling wave of energy covered my body. A light flashed around my body, and I shook out my fur as the change completed.

Beside me Jamie shook out his own fur and padded over to me. The firelight gave him an unnatural glow, and I shivered. He was night itself. Dark, violent, and dangerous.

“Finally,” Alice muttered turning around. “Eve, come here. I need to put this around your neck, and as long as you two stay close to each other you’ll stay hidden.”

I narrowed my eyes at her and approached with caution. Alice knelt and she let a necklace with an extra-long string dangle from her fingers. “This has a limited amount of power. So, you’ll have to run fast. No dawdling.”

I lowered my head, and she dropped it around my neck, letting the small stone dangling from the end of it settle in my chest fur. I felt her energy spread over me like a blanket of tingling fabric and rolled my shoulders. The necklace wouldn’t get in the way as I ran, at least.

“You,” she said looking at Jamie. “Will have to stay close to her for the magic to work on you both. If I’d had more time I would’ve made two veils for you, but this was all I had time for.”

I huffed a breath out of my nose and padded over to Jamie’s side. I felt along the mating bond that clung to the air between us, and Jamie bumped his shoulder against mine.

His scent filled my nostrils, and I felt the power bunching in my flanks. I spared Alice one last glance over my shoulder, and we took off into the woods at full speed in the direction of home.

As we bobbed through the forest, skirted the road to avoid the houses the sun rose high in the sky. Its heat burned along my back, and exhaustion burned in my limbs. Jamie never left my side.

I slowed, and he skidded to a halt at my side, giving me a curious look. He ducked his head to nudge me under the chin, and I nodded. We had to keep going. We had to help Dillon and the others, but the sun felt so hot. I was so tired. Jamie tilted his head to the side, and I felt his teeth close around the veil charm dangling around my neck. I whimpered, but he was too fast, ripping through the string to hold it in his teeth.

The moment the connection broke, my body warmed with fresh energy, and I staggered. Alice’s spell was being fueled by my own power. I growled thinking of what I’d say to her once all of this was over.

Jamie spit the charm off to the side and gave me a questioning look as if he was asking if I felt better. I gave a full body shake and scratched the ground, sending my urge to run, and race him through our bond.

His eyes dance, and off we went racing along the side of the road that would take us home.
