A fucking goddess,he said.Way out of my league.

My snort echoed around the tower.Damn right she is.

For the rest of the day, we traded thoughts and images off and on. I tried to fall asleep, but I was too keyed up. Every time I even thought about sleeping my hands shook and my heart fluttered.

It wasn’t until the moon sat high in the sky that I felt the strain sweeping through my mating bond. Jamie hadn’t spoken to me in over an hour. His mood was still pleasant and excited for my return, but now something felt off.

Rising to my feet, I closed my eyes, and turned my face up into the moonlight. Are you okay?

A minute passed without response, and I felt the strain grow tighter as something was trying to get down the bond. Something was stopping him from reaching out.

A weight sank deep in my gut. A witch was keeping him from me. The witches knew I was still alive, or maybe they were trying to make him think our bond was fraying as I supposedly ran away, or whatever story it was that Adrian had tried to sell.

Either way I didn’t like it. I needed to make sure he was okay. I needed to know he wasn’t hurt. Descending the tower, I hopped down off the low stairs and started out into the woods without a second thought. I stayed human knowing the pack would be human for the meeting at the altar, but I let my wolf out just enough that I its energy burned through my muscles.

My feet ghosted over the ground quick as I could make them go, and I slipped back into town, flipping the hood of Jamie’s jacket up to hide my face.

One of the many benefits to being his mate, and wearing his clothes was that it would muddle my scent enough that I could slip past most of the wolves in town. Not that I found anyone until I reached the back of Leeland’s diner.

I barely made it behind the dumpster before my brother and one of the witches I recognized from Claudette’s retinue stepped out the back door.

Ducking into the shadows, nearly wedging myself behind the green behemoth, I heard the click of a lighter, and the witch gave an exasperated sigh.

“I thought you quit smoking,” said the witch.

Zach chuckled. “You sound like my sister.”

“You still call her your sister? She’s betrayed the pack,” the woman observed, a hint of mischief in her voice.

“I know what Ronnie said.” Zach sighed. “Eve may not be my blood, but we were raised like siblings after her father married my mother. I was raised to love her and think of her as my sister, despite everything Ronnie used to say about her.”

“Yeah, but you know differently now.”

Zach laughed once without any audible joy. “You make it sound like knowing something is the same as feeling it.”

“Isn’t it?”

My brother laughed. “You witches are odd ducks, that’s for damn sure.”

“You still went along with Adrian’s plans when they left Estelle Falls. You were the one who made sure they were on the road so we could stage the accident.”

Zach growled. “I didn’t do that by choice. My alpha gave an order. Ihadto listen.”

The witch laughed. “You wolves are ridiculous. With all your pointless rules and hierarchy.”

“Says the witch who has to bow her head every time Claudette enters a room,” Zach chuckled, and the sound of footsteps echoed off the asphalt.

My heart lurched into my throat. I looked up and he stepped into view holding a cigarette between his lips. His eyes flicked sideways, taking in the sight of me, and he turned around.

“We should get to the altar,” he said. “Adrian will be expecting us to help corral the pups before the ceremony.”

“We still have time,” the witch said, with a purr. Zach took a large step forward back out of sight and I heard the sound of their mouths clashing in a kiss. Something, I guessed Zach, hit the front of the dumpster, and the witch moaned. It took everything I had not to gag.

After an agonizingly long few more seconds, Zach gasped. “As much as I’d love to continue this, we really do need to go.”

The pout was audible in the witch’s voice. “Oh, fine. You’re such a party pooper.”

I rolled my eyes but didn’t relax until I heard the sound of them retreating in the direction of the alley on the opposite side of the building that led to customer parking. Once I was sure I was alone, I tried the back door and slipped inside and crouched behind a stack of boxes.
