The kitchen itself was fairly empty, expect for the one person I was hoping to find. Edging out from my hiding spot, I lowered my hood, and hissed,“Lee.”

The owner whirled around, searching wildly before he finally noticed me near the floor. “Child, what are you do—”

“Shhhh.” I held my finger to my lips. “Are any of the pack out there.”

“No, your brother and his lady friend just left. I’ve only got old man Rourke out there. Evie, what are you doing in here, and barefoot?”

I looked down. I’d forgotten that my shoes were still back at the Alpha house. Standing up, I kept to the shadows of the kitchen, angling myself out of sight in case anyone walked through the front door. “Adrian’s lost his mind. He tried to kill me. I need to get back to the big house and—”

“Adrian tried to what?” He came lumbering towards me, anger and worry in his eyes. “Are you okay?”

I held up a hand. “I’m fine. I just need to borrow your truck so I can get off the street.”

“Is this something to do with your…” he made a gesture that looked vaguely like he was trying to mime that he had ears and a tail. “Secret.”

I didn’t have time to lie to him. “Adrian killed my father and Annie. I found out so he tried to kill me.”

His shoulders fell. “And you aim to return the favor?”

“If I have to,” I said. “Lee, he’s got people I care about. They’re in danger. I have to stop him, before he does something else there’ll be no coming back from.”

He nodded in thought and pulled a set of keys from his back pocket. “I’ll give you these keys on two conditions.”

I arched an eyebrow. “What?”

“First, you take the sneakers that my waitress Danny left in the locker back there before you go,” he said, pointing to the alcove just beyond the boxes I’d huddled behind.

“And the second?”

“You give the keys back to me yourself,” he said. “And that one’s a deal breaker. I don’t want to hear you died too.”

“You’ve got a deal.” I smiled.

He narrowed his eyes and held the keys out to me. I snatched them up and turned into the alcove, grabbing the generic black sneakers sitting on the bench.

“I’ll tell Danny I spilled something on them and buy her a new pair. So, don’t worry about returning those,” Leland said as I slipped them on.

I hopped back to my feet and threw my arms around his neck, giving him a big squeeze. “Thanks Lee.”

He held me tight. “You be safe, Kid.”

“I’ll do my best.”
