“I’ll see you tomorrow, boss,” she says, reaching for the door handle of her car.
I advance ahead to open it for her.
“You don’t have to do that, Essex.”
“I do. I may be a jerk, but I can still be a gentleman, right?”
She raises her brows. “Um…wrong. Jerk and gentleman don’t belong in the same sentence.”
“Well, I’m trying. How about that?”
“Okay. Kudos to you for trying.” She gets in the car, starts it up. “I’ll see you.”
“Yep.” I close the door, then watch as she drives away and I’m standing here watching her leave, completely at a loss.
One day…
One day, she won’t have to leave. We’ll be together permanently. Going home to a cold, empty house would be a thing of the past. I’ll have her there to fill it with warmth and laughter. Until then, I must pass this final test. The only problem is, I don’t know what she has up her sleeve.
