“That was it. Heaven. And a very effective recruitment strategy,” I add. “There was no way I could turn down the job with those kinds of field-trips.”

Austin laughs. “Not to mention, the business fundamentals themselves,” he says playfully.

I make a waving gesture. “Yeah, yeah, those too.”

“Sounds like fun,” Mac says, digging into his epic eggs benedict. “Can I help with research if we invest?”

“Sure,” Austin grins. “But seriously, if you’re traveling and experience a new technique, I want to know. My idea is to have a core list of offerings, but also offer rotating specials like a great restaurant.”

“Love it,” Lanie declares. “Scarcity technique. Get it while it’s hot.”

Austin nods. “Also crowdsourcing the best of the best. Anything that shows a big spike in client use? We’ll keep it on schedule.”

“Austin loves facts and figures,” I add. “He’s all about the hard data.”

“God, same!” Lanie exclaims. “People ask me my favorite Instagram follow, and I’m like… um, my own analytics page. Shower me in stats!”

We all laugh, and I wonder if we’re getting any closer to a deal. It feels like everything is clicking, but who knows with these two?

Sure enough, Mac and Lanie exchange a look. “So, we should probably talk business. After all, that’s why we’re here.”

“I thought it was for the mimosas,” Austin quips, but I can feel his whole body tense beside me in anticipation.

There’s a pause, and my heart leaps into my throat. This is it. Please, let this be it. Under the table, I grip Austin’s leg, trying to telegraph my support.

“Well, after looking at the pitch proposals, and spending time with you guys… We’re feeling it,” Mac announces.

“Big time,” Lanie agrees with a smile. “Loving the vibes—and the value proposition.”

“The perfect combo,” Mac says.

Yes!

Austin exhales in a whoosh, and I know he’s holding back a holler of celebration. “Glad to hear it,” he says instead, casual. “I think it’ll be a great investment for you guys.”

“Oh, we know it will be,” Lanie says. “My lawyers have some deal points to go over, but nothing crazy. For now… gentleman’s agreement?” she asks, offering her hand.

Austin shakes it solidly, then moves onto Mac. “Welcome aboard,” he says, grinning ear to ear. “I’m really look forward to working with you both.”

“Loving this,” Lanie says, with her hands clasped. “We’ll announce at our company’s bash tonight and then celebrate! I invested in a prosecco company last year, so the bubbles will be flowing.”

We wrap up brunch, and they leave for some more VibeFest events.

Austin and I manage to smile politely until the McClintocks are out of sight, and then we turn to each other, giddy.

“You did it!” I squeal.

“Wedid it,” he corrects. “This wouldn’t have happened without you, Jenn. Honestly. Thank you.”

“It’s my job.” I beam back.

“IknewI was right to beg you to work with me.” Austin signals for the bill. “I should go call the legal team. We need to strike out deal terms as quickly as possible.”

“Do it,” I agree. “Something tells me, Lanie’s going to strike a hard bargain. We’ll celebrate later.”

“Yes, we will.” Austin gives me a smoldering look, and then steals a kiss. “Bet on it.”

With a free afternoon,I decide to head into town and find myself a killer outfit for the big party tonight. Lanie’s shapewear brand is hosting a big bash at the festival grounds, and now that I know the vibe of VibeFest, I want to get into the spirit.
