“I was just telling Spencer the wonderful news,” Tess says.

“Ummm.” Jill cocks her head. “Which is what?”

Tess looks back up at me. “That I’m in the unique position of being able to offer him a job at theSunny Camp,” she chirps. There’s a fake smile on her face.

What is happening?

She’s suggesting that I work with her.Forher. “Me?”

Tess nods. “The town council wants a man to stay overnight in the boys’ cabin. For liability and safety purposes.” She clears her throat. “We’re already set with staffing for days and evenings. All I need is for you to show up at night after your library shift on the weekdays, and then after the car wash closes on the weekends.”

I take a beat. Caught off guard. Still, making money while I sleep doesn’t sound like the worst idea I’ve ever heard.

Jill arches her brow. “I thought you two were complete opposites. Won’t you drive each other totally crazy?”

“Maybe not totally,” I say.

“Only a survivable amount, right, Clark?” Tess punches my shoulder. Like we’re pals.

Because that’s what women always see you as, Spencer. A pal.

“Anyway, we’ll be sleeping most of the time,” Tess adds. “How bad could things get?”

She shrugs, but her eyes are wide and green like that city inThe Wizard of Oz.

So here’s what I’m thinking:

I need money for a down payment. That’s a bird. I also need Frank to think I’m going on dates. That’s another bird. Maybe Tess’s offer is one stone that can kill both those birds.

Without any actual murder.

While we’re working on this camp thing together, we could possibly go for a cup of coffee. For planning purposes. Maybe we’d even do a lunch. One whole dinner might be pushing my luck, but a jog or two around the river is definitely doable. Tess and I both jog. And I can set aside my mileage chart if it means putting Frank in his place.

Over the next month, I’ll arrange for my brother to see Tess and me out together—hopefully, enough times for him to think we’re a couple. I can’t tell her about our bet, but she’s the opposite of interested in me. It’s not like I’d be leading her on.

Good old Spencer might be getting lucky for once.

I blow out a breath. “Let’s do it.”
