“How do you know him again?” I ask.

When she had first mentioned a friend named Rule that could help me out, I had racked my brain for someone we went to school with but came up empty.

“He was in the military with Wesley,” she tells me. “They both got out a few months ago. He doesn’t have much family so we kind of took him in.”

“That was nice of you.”

That’s the Kings for you. They all have such big hearts.

“Well, he’s a good guy, so it was easy. You’ll like him,” she promises and I nod.

A black truck pulls into the little hidden driveway next to the cottage, and I tense. No one is supposed to know that I’m here, and my first thought is that my stalker found me.

“That’s Rule,” Arlowe says, not noticing the tension in my body. “I’ll let him in. Text me later about dinner, okay?”

“Sure thing,” I tell her, and she gives me one more hug before she goes to open the door.

I watch her talk to whoever is in the truck for a minute before I hurry into the bathroom to get dressed and brush my teeth.

“Hello?” comes a deep voice as I’m tugging my shirt over my head.

“Be right out!” I call back.

I straighten my clothes and run my fingers through my hair before I open the door.

“Hi, you must be Rule,” I say, extending my hand toward the man standing in the living room.

His back is to me and the first thought I have is how wide he is. The width of his shoulders is imposing with the black T-shirt stretched tight over the muscles.

“You can’t just leave the door open,” he snaps as he starts to turn around.

“Calm down. You’re not even hired yet,” I snap back.

Then he turns around.

We both freeze as our eyes lock on each other, and the breath stalls in my lungs.

Holy crap.

He’s hot, so hot, in a rugged alpha man way.

His dark brown hair is cut short to his scalp and I’m glad that it is. Nothing should get in the way of those eyes.

They’re such a light color blue that they might actually be gray. I’ve never seen eyes like that on anyone.

His nose looks like it’s been broken a time or two, but the imperfection only seems to add to his handsomeness.

“I’m Harvie,” I tell him, once I realize that my hand is still stretched out to him.

“Rule,” he grits out.

“Rule?”

“It’s actually Abel, but everyone calls me Rule,” he explains as his strong hand wraps around mine.

I shiver as his callouses rub against my hand.

He pulls back quickly and I frown at the action.
