She passes me a bundle of letters and I flip through them. I’m going to need to go through them more closely once I get back home. For right now, I need to get her somewhere safe.

“We need to leave,” I tell her, and she scowls.

“Why?”

“This place isn’t safe.”

She frowns, looking around the small cabin.

“Sure, it is. No one even knows about this place and no one knows that I’m here.”

“People know about it. Your flight information will be easy enough to track, and people will know that you’re here. You’re close friends with the Kings, right?”

“Yeah,” she admits, shifting on her feet.

“So, people will start looking around the ranch first. If someone finds this cabin, we won’t be able to spot them. There are too many trees and hiding places out there. We need to get you someplace secure, with a security system and no easy places for someone to hide and watch you.”

She gulps, looking around like a boogeyman could jump out at her at any moment. She takes a few steps toward me, and I want to cheer.

That’s it, baby. Come to me. I’ll keep you safe.

“Are the letters the only sign of a stalker?” I ask her as I move to zip up her suitcases.

“No, there was a break in too.”

“Where?”

“New York.”

“Is that where you live?”

“I have an apartment there, but I’m rarely there.”

“Do you have a boyfriend?” I blurt out and she glances at me sharply, her green eyes studying me like she’s trying to see inside my head.

“Uh, no. Is that important?”

“Just need to know if anyone is especially close to you.”

And I want to know if I have to take anyone out to have a chance with you.

“No, not really. My closest friend is Arlowe. My parents are… not in the picture.”

“Why not?”

“I’m not who they want me to be,” she mumbles and I frown.

This girl is perfect. How could anyone want her to change a thing about herself?

“The closest people to me are my agent and a few people who work at my modeling agency.”

I nod, making a few mental notes to look into those people.

“Is this all of your things?” I ask as I grab one of her suitcases.

“I have a few things in the bathroom.”

She goes to grab them, and I take her first bag out to the car. I need a minute away from her to get myself under control.
