Chapter Seven

Charlee

It’s all going to be yours soon anyways.

My heart dropped when Grayson had said that and for a second, I was worried that he had figured out my plan, that he knew why I was really here. Then he had continued and implied that he was going to marry me and take care of me and my heart had shot up into my throat.

I’ve never been in a relationship before. Most guys aren’t looking for a thief and the guys I did meet who were interested, I never wanted back. The guys who are in this business are secretive and career liars. It’s hard to be in a relationship with someone that you can never really trust, that you never really know.

Grayson isn’t like that though. There’s no guile to him at all. What you see, is what you get. It’s refreshing to meet someone who says exactly what they mean, exactly what they’re thinking. I’m just not sure how I feel about what he’s thinking. What guy that you just met talks about marriage?

It’s obvious that Grayson is already hooked. This job is going to be easier than I thought. I push away the guilt that thought stirs in me as I focus on the task at hand.

Grayson still has his arms wrapped around me and he pulls me closer until I’m plastered against him. We’re stomach to stomach and I push down the stirrings that start between my legs as I stare up into his face.

“Do you want to come inside?” He asks.

“No. I just came by to return your wallet. I should go.”

“Go where? Where are you staying?” He asks, concern evident in his voice.

“I found a new place.” I lie. Guilt hits me at lying to this man but I push it down.

“Yeah? Where? Another empty house?” He asks.

I don’t answer him and he tightens his arms around me further.

“Stay here, baby.” He pleads.

“I’m not that kind of girl, Gray. And I’m not your baby.” I snap.

“I didn’t mean it like that. I have a guest room that you can stay in. I would never force you to do anything that you didn’t feel comfortable doing.”

His voice sounds hurt and I lower my eyes. I know that Grayson is a good guy and I shouldn’t have implied any differently.

“I know. I don’t want to intrude. I’ll be ok.” I say as I try to disentangle myself from his arms.

Grayson frowns at me as I pull away. “You’re not intruding. I want you here.”

“I should really go.”

“At least let me give you a ride there then.”

“I’ll be fine.” I tell him.

He gets a stubborn look on his face and I know he’s not going to let me go that easily.

“I need to make sure that you’re safe. Please just stay here. You can have the guest room or our room or-”

“Our room?” I cut him off.

“Well, it will be one day.” He says with a small smile. “Hopefully soon.” He says under his breath.

I fight back a smile at that. God, he’s cute.

“Sorry, but I don’t stay with guys until the third date.” I joke.

The next thing I know, my hand is locked in his and he’s tugging me behind him towards his car.

“Where are we going?” I ask as he opens the passenger door for me.

“On our first date.” He says as he smiles down at me.
