“Then why doesn’t he talk to me?”
“Maybe he thinks he’s letting you down. He doesn’t want you to see him at his weakest, so he retreats until he can be strong again—for you and your children.”
“But that’s nonsense!” she cried. “Isn’t that what I’m here for—to be strong for him? Why won’t he let me help him?”
“Perhaps he loves you so much that he has no wish to burden you. He’s suffered much in the past, and those memories will never completely leave him.”
“Then what can I do?”
“Trust him,” he said. “Trust that he’ll come back to you—as he trusts that you’ll wait for him.”
And she would wait for him—forever if need be.
