‘I felt pushed out by you. You were always busy.’

‘We’ve already had this conversation, Tom, and I’m not going to accept any more of your put-downs.’

Tom stood up. ‘Babe, I’m not here to put you down. I’m here ‘cos I want us to get back together.’

‘Back together? But what about Grace and the baby?’

‘Eh?’

‘Grace is pregnant, remember? You’re setting up home together? Honestly, Tom, I knew you were irresponsible but this –’

‘Oh. That. Her period was just a bit late.’

‘And you didn’t think to tell me that?’ Holly stood up and walked away from Tom to the dining table.

‘How could I? You’ve not been speaking to me.’

Holly spun around. ‘You’re supposed to be buying a place with her.’

‘You seem to know a lot.’

‘Just an assumption.’

Tom raked a hand through his hair. ‘She’s not you.’

‘Clearly.’

‘She’s high maintenance.’ He stood up and walked over to her.

Holly took a step back.

‘I was only attracted to her because she reminded me of you. Of how you used to be when we first met. When you were young and happy.’

‘Well, I’m sorry life dealt me a blow. So sorry my parents died.’ Holly shook her head. ‘Anyway, I’ve moved on.’

‘I’ve heard you’ve been seeing that cockney.’ Tom nodded his head towards the farm.

‘You heard wrong, and my relationship status is none of your business.’

‘You’re still my wife and this is our land.’

‘I’ve been over this before.’

‘If we get back together, the whole thing will go away. I can help you build your art gallery. We can have a baby.’

Holly laughed. ‘Are you for real?’

‘And I might be able to help you financially.’

‘How? You’re supposed to be insolvent right? And you already owe me money.’

‘Well, I might come into some.’ Tom looked around the room and licked his lips.

‘You have a new life and a new job, don’t you? With Grace’s dad, at Bunnings Motorhomes?’

‘He’s always breathing down my neck. And he wants me to buy into his business.’

‘If you want out of your relationship with Grace and your job with David, don’t use me as the excuse. I’m sorry life isn’t as shiny as you thought it’d be. But forgive me for being a tiny bit unsympathetic. As I said, I’ve moved on and if you had an ounce of decency, you’d drop your claim on my land.’
