‘I don’t know why you’re forever trying to fix me up with him.’

‘Because it’s plain to see you have a thing for him.’

Julian walked over with a small plate. He flushed as he smiled at Jaz. ‘I wondered if you wanted to sample the steak?’ he said holding out the plate, upon which there were chunks of sirloin on cocktail sticks.

‘We’d love to,’ Holly said, taking a sample and chewing it, passing the other to Jaz. It was delicious. She nodded her head. ‘Yes, please. We’ll have two medium-rare, with all the trimmings.’ Holly smiled at Jaz. ‘My treat.’

Once Julian was out of earshot Jaz sat up straight. ‘So, onto a more interesting subject. I assume you need a plus one for the awards night?’ She ran a hand though her choppy bob. ‘I’ll need to book myself into hair and make-up.’

‘Well,’ Holly blushed.

Jaz leaned forward. ‘If you take me, it’ll be so much more fun than if Ethan goes.’

‘I’ve asked Mitch.’

‘Mitch?’ Jaz sat back. ‘Brother-like, my backside.’

‘Well he did enter the painting into the competition.’

‘So, I really am bottom of the pile then?’

‘I thought you’d be away – working.’

‘True. I probably will be.’ Jaz’s face broke into a grin. ‘So Mitch then?’ she said wiggling her eyebrows.

Holly laughed. She was so pleased Jaz was back. Banter with Jaz was certainly a distraction. And whilst she’d never ask Jaz to, she secretly wished she would come back to the Somerset showroom.

‘So, what are you going to wear?’

‘Seeing as my occasion dresses went up in smoke, I’ll have to buy something new.’

‘I tell you what – I’ve a fab dress you can wear. It’s been hung in my wardrobe for ages as it’s way too long and I’ve not got around to taking it up. It’ll be perfect for your date.’

‘It’s not a date. It’s a networking opportunity.’

As Jaz laughed, Julian brought over their steaks.

They enjoyed their food in silence and Holly thought about the awards night.Does Mitch think it’s a date?
