‘No, a burial.’ Mitch rubbed the back of his neck.

Holly frowned.

‘He reserved a plot years ago. Before it filled up.’

‘Really?’

Mitch coughed.

‘Sorry, didn't mean to sound critical. I’d like to come.’Why did I say that? she thought. She hated funerals.

‘No.’

Holly frowned at Mitch. ‘Oh, are Lovelands not welcome?’

Mitch cleared his throat. ‘My family would welcome you, but Sid indicated he wanted the service to be family only and as I said, maybe we should talk about Sid and your grandmother, Ivy.’

Holly sipped her coffee. ‘Another time.’

‘Okay, but all I am doing is respecting his wishes. Come here for the wake afterwards – it’ll be at two o’clock.’

‘Do you need any help with the food?’

‘No, my parents and sister will be here and they’ll no doubt be wanting to busy themselves with the preparations.’

‘If there’s any help you need whatsoever, just let me know.’ Holly wanted to change the subject. She studied Mitch, and realised that whilst she felt a connection, there was so much she did not know about him. What was his favourite colour? What was his favourite football team? Maybe he was a rugby kind of guy?

Holly put her cup down and folded her hands on the table. ‘What football team do you support?’

Mitch laughed. ‘That’s a bit random.’

Holly blushed.

‘Are you after a date for a football match?’ Mitch smiled.

Holly swallowed. ‘No, I just wondered what you were into.’

‘What I’m into?’ Mitch sipped his coffee, smiling at her over the cup, his eyes not leaving her face.

She felt hot and instantly regretted what sounded like a chat up line. ‘Sports-wise.’

‘Well, I love ice hockey.’

‘Ice hockey? Is that big in Essex?’

Mitch laughed and sat back in his chair. ‘No. I went on an agricultural field trip with college and we spent some time in Canada. I watched a few games and was hooked, even had a go myself and I wasn’t that bad either. It’s not something I could do back home in Braintree, but I’ve continued to follow it.’

‘Interesting.’

‘Is it?’ Mitch grinned. ‘What are you into Holly? Sports or otherwise?’

‘The only sport I’ve played in recent years is darts, up at the Eversley Arms.’

‘Really? That surprises me.’

‘Only against Jaz. I’m not on the team.’ Holly drained her cup, scalding her throat. ‘Well, I’d better get back to my little studio.’

Mitch raised his eyebrows; did she detect disappointment?
