Jared holds his hands up in surrender. “Easy, tiger! It was an innocent question.”

“No such thing as an innocent question when it comes to you and women,” I scoff.

“Harsh, but true,” Dex agrees.

“Says the man who hasn’t gotten laid for—how long has it been?” Jared asks with a smirk.

“None of your fucking business,” Dex replies with a glower. “Not all of us are obsessed with getting our cocks wet in every pussy in Houston.”

“I’m hurt you have such a low opinion of me,” Jared says, pretending to be offended.

“You can’t block out the past between a different woman’s legs every week,” Dex says bluntly. “Gotta face up to those demons some time or other, bro.”

Jared falls uncharacteristically quiet. He takes a long swig of beer and then shrugs. “Facing them doesn’t make them go away. Won’t bring her back.”

We fall quiet, knowing he’s thinking about his sister. He still blames himself for her death in a fire. It’s the reason he became a firefighter.

“So, you gonna tell us who this mystery woman is?” Dex asks, breaking the uncomfortable silence.

“Her name’s Poppy. She works for Edgar Financial Consultants,” I explain.

Dex’s eyebrows rise. “You called them?”

I nod. “Took your advice.”

“Good for you,” Dex replies. “She’s a looker. My brother-in-law got a consultant with a beer belly and a personal hygiene problem.”

“Then I guess I got lucky,” I murmur, my eyes drifting towards the office, remembering how Poppy came apart in my arms. God, it was fucking sweet, watching her come so hard her legs almost gave way. What would it be like to watch her come on my cock or with my tongue buried in her tight hole?

“Earth to Jensen!”

“What?” I look blankly at Jared, whose good humor seems to have returned. He’s never down for long.

“Fuck, you’ve got it bad, bro. About fucking time,” he grins.

He’s right. It is about fucking time.
