TWENTY-EIGHT

I strode away, and heard footsteps as Jesse followed me. He was silent for the most part, but there was no denying his presence.

My mind churned as I struggled to come up with a plan as to what I was going to do next.

What was there to do next?

I was stuck living at Jesse's house, and was the host to a practically-parasitic wolf who could snatch my body any time she wanted. I was constantly starving as I tried to adapt physically to the wolf within me, but didn’t have the money to pay for the food I’d need to keep adapting without Jesse.

Maybe if I could figure out how to control my wolf, I could get away from Jesse after the mating shit was over. Maybe I could learn how to be a lone wolf or something. Jesse's mom had said it wasn't possible, that our wolves would constantly seek each other out, but why would I trust her? She was as much a monster as the rest of them.

The rest of us.

We ran into the animal control guys as we exited the forest. Jesse stepped up to my side, his fingers slipping between mine. I wanted to pull away, but was pretty sure I knew what he was doing.

"What were you doin' out there?" one of the animal control guys asked, his gaze on us suspicious.

Jesse smirked at the men. "Just enjoying the fresh air alone together."

One of them glanced at me, undoubtedly taking in my messy hair and clothes. Awareness flooded their gazes.

"In the snow?" another of the guys asked.

"Everyone's got their kinks." The first guy shrugged. "Did you see any wolves out there?"

Shit. They knew we were wolves, not dogs.

"No, sorry. We were a little busy." Jesse's hand slid out of mine, so his arm could drape over my shoulder. "Are we good to go?"

"Sure. Just be careful; there are some rabid wolves out here," one of the guys warned.

Jesse and I nodded like we were scared, and headed toward the cars.

I removed his arm from my shoulder as I strode toward his vehicle. My fists clenched at my sides as I tried to come up with an alternative to the shitshow that was my life.

I couldn't come up with a single damn one.

We drove home in silence, other than the music playing quietly from the speakers. Jesse was trying to give me time to work through my thoughts, I assumed, but there was no working through happening.

Only fierce frustration building.

"Let's have dinner with the pack tonight," Jesse said as we parked in the garage.

He hadn't brought it up since the last time I shot him down, but I'd known it was only a matter of time.

"Fine.” I didn't know why I was agreeing to it; my life had gone to hell because of their damn pack.

"Don't sound so enthusiastic, Teapot." Jesse patted my knee.

"Don't touch me." My voice came out harsher than I intended.

He withdrew his hand, his eyebrows colliding as he frowned.

"You made me a monster, Jesse. I get that you didn't have a choice, but you're still the reason I am what I am now. That's not something I can just forget and let go."

He nodded, raking a hand through his hair before buckling his seatbelt. "Let's get you some food."

His voice was strained, the way it usually got when he was horny. But this time, there was no lust involved.
