Fuck.

Wings.

I pressed my thumbs against my middle finger on my free hand. “You need to go. I can look after myself,” I said. Trying to decide if I should get on with it and create some magic.

“Aurora, you’re injured. I’m trying to help you, not hurt you,” he said.

“I’m fine,” I said. “You know my name. Who are you?” Though, in reality, I knew who it was.

“I’m a good Samaritan,” he said, and maybe he was, and maybe not. “Let me take care of you.”

“No, stay there. In fact, just leave.”

“You are quite the stubborn one, aren’t you?” he said, with a distinct amount of humour in his voice.

“I can’t see your face,” I said, trying to squint a little harder, but all I could see outlined was a square jaw and not much else.

“You’re not supposed to be worrying about what I look like. Let’s get you somewhere more comfortable.”

I yelped as the beast picked me up and I don’t know if he flew or ran super fast, but before I had time to think about it; he stopped and propped me against a tree.

I moaned and rolled my head into my stomach.

“You’ll be fine. They’ve come for you,” he said, running a soothing hand from my head to my hips. Holding my shoulders from behind, he pushed up my jacket at the waist and laid his hand over my stomach. My eyes widened and my breath hitched as his fingers splayed, running his palm over my skin. There was a growl under his breath, but his words were gentle when he said, “don't worry, you’ll feel better soon.”

My leg hurt like hell but my stomach instantly felt at ease, and I could see three bright lights ahead of me. I gasped at his warm breath against my cheek and I think my heart stopped for that one moment.

“Thank you,” I said.

I turned, but he disappeared. I looked again all around as much as my pain would allow but he dissolved into the air as though he had never been there at all.

Chapter 38

Seb

Myheadwasexplodingwith worry and also with the bright white orbs of the streetlights as I sped through the town. I was travelling fast enough to get there, but slow enough to avoid the police. And finally, after what seemed like a lifetime, we reached the spot where Lacey said she was when she tried to get away from the car.

“Look, skid marks, drive slowly because she definitely passed this area,” Kane said, pointing at the shiny tracks on the road.

The car crawled as we kept our watch on the two sets of skid marks on the road. A set was a bike’s wheels and the other a large wheeled vehicle, and we knew she must have slammed her brakes on hard.

Kane twisted to the rear of the car, looked at Ryan and asked, “are you still in pain?”

I glanced into the rear-view mirror to see Ryan show his face and nod.

“Good,” Kane said. “She’s still alive.”

“Thanks for the sympathy,” Ryan huffed, rubbing his leg, but at least he was breathing fine now. It was funny finding out Ryan and Lacey had a link through pain—not that he was laughing.

“Stop,” Kane yelled. “The bike skid marks have disappeared.” He pointed to the road and only one set of marks continued. “Reverse a bit.”

I did as he asked and the car wheels screeched to a halt as I pulled up on the side of the road.

“My stomach,” Ryan groaned.

“We need to find her quick. Let’s see if she is at the side of the road,” Carter said, running around to the back of the car, and opening the boot and throwing each one of us a torch. “She must have hurt her leg because Ryan is limping.”

“Worse, he is talking about his stomach now,” I said. “We need to find her quick. I wonder if she would’ve taken the bike off-road to get away.”
