Carter sighed and turned away. “I told you I didn’t.”

“I saw you,” I whispered.

Carter shook his head. “Lacey, it’s a memory they gave you. It didn’t happen.”

Clay blew out a breath and turned to me. “It’s true. What Carter is saying it true. I drugged you and then we produced a different memory for you, and once you completed your memory, we gave Carter the same one until you left his bedroom.”

“You mean I created it?” I said, my voice raised and shaking my head at the horror that I could do that.

“We started it off using your fears.”

“Oh,” I whispered.

“But Carter came to me, told me you wouldn’t forgive him for what he did. So you should both return to the chamber and the memory will be removed. The kingdom believe it is now necessary for you to move forward together.”

“And Clay admitted we were both given the same memory because they preferred me to be the bad guy in this and not you.” Carter’s face saddened, and I gave him a small smile. I suddenly felt sorry for him.

“But why?” Ryan asked.

“We knew what they planned for that evening. The kingdom couldn’t take the chance of Lacey binding before her magic came into being.” Clay turned to me. “You weren’t ready. It could have killed you.”

I swallowed as I ran my fingers over my temples. “Could it kill me now?”

“No, not now. Your magic prevents it, though you still don’t have your full powers, but it could kill Carter, depending on how potent it is and how well you can control it.”

I gazed at Carter, my mouth dropped open. He could die for this, for me. I turned to him. “Are you happy with that, Carter? I might kill you.”

“You won’t, I trust you,” Carter said and smiled. Our eyes lock together and I remembered why I loved him like I did. He protected me all of my life.

“Okay,” I said, and Seb stroked delicate fingers down my spine. The tingle was like it always was with him. I turned to smile at him.

“Your families are the strongest two and therefore you will produce the strongest children. The kingdom would prefer you to abide by their decision, but ultimately you will be the ruler. They are your servants.” Clay looked at Seb as my head rested on his shoulder. “But their wish for that stronger future is for Carter to be the first bind and preferably the man you have a child with. You can bind to others after him.”

“Others?”

“Knights. You can have many binds, but once a man binds to you, you’re connected forever. I wanted you to choose your own knights for that reason. I wanted your knights to mean something to you. So be careful of whom you choose to bind with, only accept if you think he is worthy because the bind lasts forever.”

“Forever. That puts a new perspective on things.”

Clay nodded and turned his attention to the men. “And that applies to you too. Binding will make you forever Lacey’s. You don’t have to bind to be her knight. But you do to gain more magic and for Lacey to replicate yours. It’s a discussion you all need to have with Lacey in private.”

“I can bind to many knights, but they can only bind once?” I asked, blowing out a breath.

“Yes, if they choose to bind with you. You’re royal.” Clay smiled at me. “Outside of the royal line, they can bind with others in the same way all magical people can.”

I stood and strolled to the window, taking in the guards marching round. Had I never noticed before the amount of security, or was this because I was here?

“Can I have sex without binding?” I asked, turning back to Clay.

“Yes, but it’s best to use a condom, if the man...” He cleared his throat.

“Comes?” I asked.

Uncle Clay let out a sigh. “Yes, if he ejaculates inside you, your sensations change and it could cause the binding process to begin, and if you’re heightened, you might allow the coupling, which if it was your knight it would be fine but you are both vulnerable.”

I glanced at Kane and realised how close we were.

“When the times comes and you’re ready. I want you to bind here,” Clay said. “Preferably soon.”
