“Well, apart from during the bind. Your eyes will pulsate, and that is when your partner knows you are binding. It is best if you don’t look at any other knight other than Carter at that point. We believe Carter can take it.”
“If I do look?”
“Your binding partner could die if he isn’t strong enough, and the pull is too great.”
“And will Carter’s eyes pulsate?”
“No, only your eyes pulsate. You are the royal, Lacey.” Clay hesitated. “There is only one way his eyes will pulsate but we don’t believe it will happen.”
I turned to gaze at Carter but my eyes locked on Kane's.
“And the other question?” Clay asked.
“Sorry?” I blinked hard and turned my gaze back to my uncle.
“You said you had two questions,” Clay said.
“Oh, yes... Who is the other person the kingdom has chosen for me to bind to?” I looked at Seb, Ryan, and then Kane.
“Another member of the Upper House, although he is a couple of years older than you.”
“Does he have a name?”
I narrowed my eyes when Clay shifted in his seat and glanced at Carter. “A man who possesses one of the stronger magics of time, and he would be a brilliant match.”
“Still no name,” I said. Clay was being deliberately evasive.
“Jack Stanford.”
“As in Jack at university?”
“Yes, you’ve already met him.”
“On my birthday, in the restaurant... You knew who they were?” My voice raised, but it was easy to believe. Everything, the way he was with me, the things he said. It all made sense.
“Of course, Lacey. I know all the knights. I sent them to look after you until I arrived. It was between these men,” Clay said and waved his hand around. “Or Jack and Blake. I was leaving the final decision up to you.”
“What the fuck?” Carter hissed.
That was the moment I realised Carter didn’t know everything.

Kane
“Jack...”sherepeatedhisname again.
“Forget about Jack for now, that’s a conversation we need to have alone.”
Alone.
My inner beast growled. Everyone turned to me.
Maybe it wasn’t inside.
Lacey’s eyes opened wide and her gaze travelled back to me. I wanted her to steer the conversation away from Jack, but at the same time, I wanted to know what was planned. The other guys rumbled their dissatisfaction.
“And if his eyes pulse. What does that mean?” Lacey asked. Jack gone from her thoughts. Her eyes zeroed in on her uncle as she waited for his reply. Her teeth grazed over her bottom lip and damned if I wanted to be the one with her teeth on my lips, or mine on hers.
