She smiled. “I missed you.”

The sixteen seater ornate dining table sat in the centre of the large room. Adorned with a large floral centrepiece of winter coloured flowers and a large ivory candle was glowing in the centre.

The fawn coloured curtains looked silk and draped in a puddle against the plush similar coloured carpet. Many works of art covered the walls, and I expected they came from a fancy art gallery and probably cost more than I’d ever earn—and all going well—I was planning on becoming a lawyer, and earning lots of money.

There was definitely money in this house—Lacey’s money. Funny that, her living in the dorms and not being showy or fancy. Yeah, she had a motorbike, but that was the same as lots of students.

“Excuse me.” A voice came from behind me.

Startled away from my thoughts, as dinner was served. We started with a light vegetable soup and next was a delicious beef wellington accompanied by sautéed green beans and broccoli, grilled asparagus wrapped in bacon and finished with a madeira sauce. I was already quite full by the time dessert came, but none of us turned away the chocolate mousse, presented inside a hard shell of marbled chocolate, and finished with berries for a light end to the meal. Along with a coffee, of course.

“Don’t worry, it won’t be like this every day. Clay organised his chef to cook dinner, I’m not so extravagant,” Lacey said.

“I’m not worried. I could eat like a king every day,” Ryan said as he devoured his dessert. Saying my thoughts out loud.

“I grew up with this. It gets tedious. Sometimes you want to get a pizza and slob and watch the television,” Lacey said.

“Yeah, I could still eat pizza later,” Carter said.

“You eat like a...” Ryan started.

“Pig,” I interrupted before he finished.

“I was going to be more polite than that and say horse. You can pack it away,” Ryan said to Carter.

We continued ribbing Carter for his eating needs but I noticed Lacey was in a world of her own, she normally would have a laugh when we goaded each other and especially when the victim was Carter, but I gazed at her for a while longer, she was doing some strange rolling thing with her thumbs before she sighed and looked around the table.

“I’ve got something to tell you all,” she began and hesitated again.

“Go on,” Carter said.

Lacey nodded and looked at her dessert as she pretended to put her spoon into the mousse. “I know before the big fall out we...” She rolled her eyes. “Youall had the conversation about me and my virginity.”

After a clattering of cutlery, the room became deathly silent. Lacey looked around at each of us and I expected this was the time she was going to tell us who she’d chosen. It didn’t bother me anymore. Obviously, I wanted Lacey, but I just wanted her, not her virginity.

I wanted her period. As always.

She smiled at me and then at Ryan, Carter, and finally Kane. She put her head down and stared at her spoon, which still hovered over her dessert that sat untouched on her plate. Her thumb was now rolling around her teeth, and she looked more nervous than ever.

“I’m not a virgin anymore,” she said, her voice low.

“What the fuck?” Carter hissed, and he slammed his fist onto the table. “Who... who?” He stared at Lacey as he repeated the same word over and over again, as though he couldn’t get any other words out.

I know it’s not me and I now know it’s not Carter.

She glared at his fist as it remained against his dessert plate. “It’s none of your business to know who. Just that it isn’t a big deal anymore. Not that it should have been a big deal, anyway.”

“Was it Jack?” I asked, feeling hurt suddenly as I thought Lacey felt the same connection. Something fizzled between us all the time. Would she choose Jack over me?

“No, it wasn’t Jack.”

“Blake?” I pushed because, if it was that bastard, I was going to punch his smug face into the back of his head. It would also mean he wouldn't stop, he would make sure Lacey was his.

“No!” Lacey shouted. “Why does it matter? It is not a discussion point anymore.”

“Did he wear a condom?” Carter asked.

Lacey glared at Carter, but stayed silent for a short time. “Fuck off Carter. All you’re concerned about is nobody binding before you. But remember, I still decide on that too,” Lacey said. Her voice raised and her eyes rolled as she let him know she knew what he was out for.
