“Yes...” He sighed. “No.”

I felt an awful dread with no more words. “What’s happened?”

“Polly Turner,” he said.

“No,” I whispered, shaking my head. “Don’t tell me something has happened to her?” But I knew something had. The moment he said her name, I knew she was no longer here.

“Lacey, I’m sorry.”

Tears streamed down my eyes. “I left her alone.”

“Lacey...”

“It’s my fault,” I whispered.

“Lacey, she was not a lone knight, she was in a group of four and they lived in the same dorms. But the other knights said she was no longer focused.”

I hiccuped a sob. “Not focused.”

“She was dating and let her guard down.”

“These dated before I arrived,” I argued, watching Seb as he sat on the arm of the chair next to Carter. Ryan handed me a tissue and gave me an enormous smile. I tried my hardest to return it.

“I didn’t date,” Kane said.

“None of us dated, Lacey,” Carter said.

Clay sighed and stood up, walking to me and sitting beside me. “They hardly saw her. The other knights told me she was hoping you’d end up with Jack and Blake and she wanted to join them as knights.”

I nodded, thinking back to how much she tried to push me towards Jack and Blake.

“Who killed her?”

“We think it was another demon.”

Clay continued talking, not sure anymore what was going on. I was whirling, and I got stuck in the middle of the tornado and all I could hear was white noise.

Round and round, my head spun, my eyes got heavier. I needed sleep. So many people dying, all because of me. Born to save this world from a darker one. Yet, I wasn’t saving anyone, people around me dying and all because of me.

“Lacey,” I could hear someone calling my name. Not placing who it was. I didn’t turn to the voice, my head didn’t move. I was struggling to process the information. The deaths, the decoys, the people who were dying to save me.

She died because of me. Sweet Polly, all she wanted was to have fun and find a nice boyfriend. All she wanted was attention and a little love. And now, because of me, she was dead.

Was that it? Had I missed it all along. I knew my parents hadn’t had a car accident; I felt it. Had they succumbed to the same fate? Had I been looking for someone to blame and all along it was me.

“Lacey,” I heard my name again. I could see everyone watching me, but it was as though it wasn’t real and I wasn’t there. Only looking from a distance.

“You’re not to blame, Lacey.” The voice was hazy and hollow and then I fought against the ringing sound in my ears. Or was it my head? I wasn’t sure anymore, but it didn’t matter because then there was nothing and my world fell into a deathly, dark silence.

Chapter 48

Lacey

“Lacey,Lacey...”

I felt something wet on my mouth and I swiped my tongue along my lips to taste a saltiness.

“Somebody get her a drink of water,” Clay shouted.
